OPTRA Fuel Question

Just collected my OPTRA .

Have been reading the Owners Manual but cannot find anything to indicate what grade of petrol is suitable for it .

Thought of saving some cents by pumping the cheapest grade.

Anybody have any adverse experience with RON 92 petrol ?

You just collected it? It is RON95 minimum. It has this RON selector relay installed. If you pull it out, you can use RON92.

Ya, but then u have even less power.

 

Keep it at 95 ron but go easy on the throttle. Keeps your FC down.

Great car u bought. Is yours the optra or optra 5 ?

 

I like the optra 5 estate auto. (No flamming please ).

 

Maybe u can post some reports on your FC, handling & such as the car gets run-in, for potential optra buyers to see.

 

BTW, can share how much u paid for it & if u got any extras from the SE?

Its not the power on the car. It is your power to control what the car can take. Petrol price go up, pull it out. Petrol price go down, plug it back in.

Yah I know, but when u adjust to ron92, the ignition will retard & u lose power.

 

With setting to ron95, ignition will b default which gives the stated HP.

 

With less power, pple will tend to step harder on the accelerator to move off & overtake which will increase the FC which will cancell out any savings on using ron92.

 

Ron92 setting is mainly for countries where u cannot get ron95 petrol, so only way is to retard ignition otherwise engine knock will damage the engine in the long run.

Now i'm real scared cos i've been pumping ron92 sometimes for my focus, but at $10 or $20 when in SG. Nowadays i've reverted to VPOWER from boleh-land. It is possible my engine maye have alreadi suffered the effects of pinging?

Tell you the truth, there are RON92 and RON95 Optra owners. Many reported no differences in their FC. Some reported better torque but that is it. Nothing spectacular.

I see a plug just beside the main fuse box with a yellow sticker saying 95 .

Is this the one ?

Just pull out the plug to use RON 92 ?

 

I always thought that nowadays the computer will auto detect and retard the ignition if there is any danger of pinking .

Mine is the OPTRA saloon , manual trans.

 

My previous car was the Daewoo Leganza 2.0 , manual also .

I find that 1.6l or even the 2.0l Leganza do not have enough oomph to go Auto , what with only 4 speeds available .

 

After just a couple of trips , nothing much to hilite .

Power is obviously down from the Leganza , torque at idle was very much less ; tried to dump the clutch a little too early this morning and the engine stalled . Rather embarrasing .

Road bumps were well controlled , I think a little better than the Leganza , the dampers and the bushings are still brand new . Need 100,000km to wear them out .

Wind noise seems better subdued , at least up to about 90 km/h .

Road noise is worse , mind you I am comparing a set of virgin GR80 versus the old set which has clocked > 40,000 km . Also I am using 195 tyres now , I expect the noise level to be lower .

Looks like have to do some sound proofing , soon .

 

This morning the "Malfunction indicator Lamp" come on all the way from home to work and all the way from work to Stars Auto .

(this is the symbol that looks like an engine)

At SA , it worked fine , the maintenance people cannot find any fault nor any fault history .

The computer may have picked up some loose connection somewhere or the fault righted itself .

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yep. That's it. Its just a simple relay. The older Alfas (33) used this "relay' thingy too.

I don't think u wud do any damage by pumping 5 lit of ron92 mixed with abt 25-30 lit of ron97.

 

If u average off, u prob still get ron95 or above.

 

I also but very seldom pump abt 5 lit ron92 here b4 going to pump full tank in MY.

 

Don't think any problem.

 

If u don't hear any knocking sound when moving off or accelerating, no harm was done.

 

Lower ron can only b felt when stressing the engine. If u don't push it, u wont get any knock, unless your engine is in very bad shape or u use very low ron compared to what u require.

Guess that's abt the only slight diff u get with slightly lower HP due to lower ron petrol.

 

They may feel more difference when they push their cars hard.

 

If slow driving, then just use ron92, especially since petrol is now so ex in SG.

 

I even considered the effects of ron87 in MY for my car but didn't really bother to try as their petrol is so cheap compared to here.

I guess u really push your cars as the 2.0 leganza auto sud b adequate for normal SG driving.

 

Rather surprised u say road noise is high. My fren found it quiet compared to the Altis.

 

With the malfunction warning light up, seems the thai optra also has bugs like the other thai cars.

 

Guess i'll only consider the Korean optra 5 now.

I find that auto cars do loss out a bit compared to manual trans .

You know the same number of horses are there , but they are just a little lethargic during acceleration phase . One cruising , there should not be any difference .

 

For the road noise of the OPTRA , to be fair , I was comparing it to the Leganza which was sound proofed at quite a considerable expense . Not comparing apples to apples .

 

As for the reliability , the malfunction warning lite could be my own doing .

After collecting the car , I was poking and pushing and pulling or molesting it all over .

Could have been a self induced fault .

Must listen out to the other owners who had their cars for the past 2 years and the experiences they had .

Agreed auto cars do lose out slightly to a manual, but I also know how much easier it is to drive an auto in SG. Especially in a jam or slow moving traffic.

 

Road noise: OK so optra cannot fight with a heavily soundproofed leganza. Not surprised there.

 

 

Ah, so u molested your baby as soon as u got it. So impatient. Car is just like a woman. Go slow at first till u know her intimately till she begs you to "take her". Then u can do what u want with her consent.

Hi all bought my Optra 1.6 Auto Sept05 and pump in 92Ron since day 1. So far no problem. Went to KL on a number of occasions & had drove at 160km at times no problem. 13,000km travelled so far and car performing fine

Oops btw I'm no hell driver driving 160km it was just tat I was on the right lane and there was those people who drove near my back tat i had to speed up and on the left lane are buses and lorries that I would not cut in as yet.
