Thadeus6 Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 Hi guys, Thinking of upgrading my current ride to a Volvo or a Saab. I am more inclined towards Saab (possibly the current model 9-5 or 9-3SS). Would like to hear comments from brothers out here about which would be a better buy in terms of maintenance, parts cost, parts availability and workshops specializing in these Swede beauties. Thanks. Jerry ↡ Advertisement

Super7 Turbocharged February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 Welcome to MCF, I have driven a Volvo for two years, enjoyed it thoroughly:- solid, fast (mine got turbo 225hp), respectable (me family man, got abit of image to keep), spacious, nice comfy seats, no regrets,......... on the other hand, a few die-hard Saabers in MCF will be giving you their advice very soon........ just my 2 cents'..... cheers
Soya Supersonic February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 (edited) Unbiased advice from me - join the revolvolution. But seriously, Volvo: OMV generally higher + lower selling price = less dealer markup $$. Saab's markups are known to be a bit . Oh, and u get 3 yrs warranty & full maintenance thrown in too. Which volvo model u comparing the 9-3 with? Edited February 25, 2003 by Soya
Saaber Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 Hi, Come down to the meetup and I will show you what a Saab is capable of.....
Thadeus6 Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Author Share February 25, 2003 Which one would you compare with? 9-5/9-3 with S40 or is it S60? I am thinking 9-5 with S60 or 9-3 with S40. Is that a fair comparison? Both 9-5 and 9-3 are both 2.0. Is the S40T also 2.0? or is it still 1.8? I forget. The S60 is 2.5, right? Sorry please educate me. I am more familiar with Saab than Volvo which also shows a slight bias towards the former.

Super7 Turbocharged February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 hmmmmm.... will there be a shoot-out between Saab and Volvo this coming meetup???........ i mean to see which screen washers can shoot soapy water the furthest????
Soya Supersonic February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 (edited) Yup, 9-3 vs S40, 9-5 vs S60. The only S40 u can buy in SG is the 2.0 T4 HPT. S60 comes in either 2.0T LPT or a 2.3 T5 HPT. Volvo guru TB will sure drop in and give more info. Edited February 25, 2003 by Soya
Thadeus6 Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Author Share February 25, 2003 So when is the next meetup? I have met TB and some of the other guys once before. So I may not be a regular face but I have been following MCF postings and reading them frequently.
Saaber Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 The 9-3SS new look will be more refreshing and appealing than S40 since it had been around for quite a while althought the 200hp of the S40 T4 would be more desirable than the 150HP one...so to compare apple to apple, you would have to compare the 9-3SS Aero with the S40 T4..... The 9-5 would give better value for money as the space inside is huge as compared to S60.....Power wise they are pretty similar excaept that the S60 dosen't come with Trip Computer as standard like 9-5. End of the day, the key word is "buy without regret"....

Thadeus6 Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Author Share February 25, 2003 My thoughts exactly........ but it won't be a new one since a Saab is way too expensive for my blood to buy new. I have been eyeing the 9-3SS. It is a really sexy car IMHO. So right now, I am seriously considering the 9-5 2nd hand but it won't be real soon, perhaps later half of the year. Heard that the 9-5 was built from the same platform as the Vectra. Any ideas? If you are going to be there for the meetup this Friday, I will sure try to make it to meet you guys Cheers.. Saaber Neutral Newbie February 25, 2003 Share February 25, 2003 9-5 was indeed based on the Vectra platform and Saab really did a good job masking it, you will not see a hint of Vectra anywhere and plenty of authentic Saab character and the engine is sweet too.....the original Saab engine unlike the 9-3SS which was based on a Opel Vectral 2.0L engine...lost some of the Saab magic there.... I'll be there this Friday....hope to see u there....
