Hi folks,

I am thinking of buying some gear oil for my car. But I do not know how much I will need. Anyone has any idea?

Thanks.

Dun buy, just go to the workshop and changed the new gear oil. I not sure how are you going to change the oil. i saw the workshop is using some machine to drain the oil out from the gear box below and pump in the new gear oil.

Not sure about your car, but mine corolla G6 took in exactly 3 quarts. I've tried Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90, and currently using Redline MT-90. Both synthetic gear oil indeed provide much better shifting than those normal gear oil provided by workshops.

Do check if your gearbox is using GL4 or GL5 specification gear oil.

Mazda 121 is GL4, capacity is 2.5L. Thanks to all whom reply.

Anyway, what is the difference betw GL4 and GL5?

GL4 spec. is for gear box which contain yellow metal component, such as brass, bronze, etc. it will not attack these yellow metal component inside.

GL5 spec. is usually meant for differential gearbox, such as those you see on lorry where they have a gear box at the rear axle, or cars which are rear-wheel drive but engine infront. Those differential gearbox required GL5 cos this spec. contain sulfur additive, which will attack yellow metal component. The presence of sulphur additive cos its a extreme pressure (EP) additive.

Quite difficult to find GL4 gear oil, I only know Redline which is a pure GL4 spec from MxTading, or Royal Purple which is a GL4/GL5 spec gear oil. I think Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil at Autobac is also GL4, if I'm not mistaken...
