A rebadged Deepal S07?

Mazda is fast-tracking its EV expansion by leaning on its Chinese partner. After launching the EZ-6 last year, the sedan’s SUV counterpart has now been revealed on the Weibo social media platform. The EZ-60 is also coming alive courtesy of a tie-up with Changan, a state-owned automaker. Their 50:50 joint venture, founded over a decade ago, helped Mazda launch the 6e in Europe. Similarly, this new model should be sold outside China as the CX-6e.

Essentially, we’re dealing with a production version of the Arata concept. It’s an attempt at making another electric SUV with the hope that it’ll be more successful than the slow-selling MX-30. It looks sharp, and we’re pleasantly surprised to see flying buttresses, which are uncommon in this body style. In case you're wondering, mirror-replacing side cameras have been legal on production vehicles in China for about two years.

The Tesla Model Y competitor is likely a Deepal S07 underneath the skin, implying a fully electric drivetrain and a range-extending variant with a 1.5-liter gas engine. However, whether the latter powertrain will be available in Europe is unclear. Mazda only offers the Model 3-fighting EZ-6 sedan as a pure EV for now. If you're unfamiliar with Deepal, it's the electric subsidiary brand of Changan.

Mazda is considering a third and fourth model from its JV with Changan. If approved, the additional vehicles will be released between 2028 and 2030. In the meantime, the Zoom-Zoom company is working on its own platform for EVs. The first model is scheduled to come out in 2027, with derivatives to follow by the decade's end.

Mazda is still the best designer amongst the Japanese car makers.

The center screen is a clever design, reducing the need for another passenger side installation.

More information about the new crossover from Mazda. And yes, it is based on the Deepal S07.

The EZ-60 doesn’t look like your typical Mazda SUV, and that’s because it’s not really a Mazda. This upcoming Tesla Model Y rival is closely related to the Deepal S07, a product of Changan, Mazda’s joint venture partner in China.

The EZ-60 will be available with a range-extending gasoline engine, mirroring its sedan sibling, the EZ-6. While the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV employs an 830-cc rotary engine as a generator, this larger electric SUV opts for a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine. It doesn’t drive the wheels, since its role is to charge a 31.7-kilowatt-hour battery that delivers 160 kilometers of range under the forgiving CLTC cycle.

Power comes from a 255-horsepower electric motor mounted at the rear axle, while the gasoline engine contributes 97 hp as a generator. MIIT documents reveal the EZ-60 tips the scales at 1,992 kg. A simpler, fully electric version of the EZ-60 is also on the way, though its technical specs remain under wraps. Logic tells us it'll weigh a lot more due to a significantly larger battery pack.

Wiper likely wipe 180 deg.

Anything longer, it will slanted 1 side.

With wiper in the middle, it will serve both LHD & RHD

External dimensions of the EX-60 are:

Length: 4,850mm

Width: 1.935mm

Height: 1,620mm

EX-60_interior_01.thumb.JPG.fff988056ffd0c372f0203b8716164d1.JPG

This will place the Mazda EX-60 in the mid-sized SUV category of BYD's Sealion 7, Tesla's Model Y, Volkswagen ID4, BMW iX, Polestar 3 and many others. The EX-60 is based on Changan’s EPA1 platform, which is also shared with the Deepal S07. The Deepal S07 already has a RHD version that's sold in Australia - so it should be doable for the EX-60 to be in European market in early 2026.

The interior tech from Changan is quite impressive with that 26.5" center screen at 5k resolution. Also has a 3D Heads Up Display (HUD) that's about 100" - not sure how that's possible? There's 23-speaker audio system with Dolby Atmos to watch movies on that huge screen.

Manual air vents provided for the die-hards that want physical controls.

Digital rear view mirrors! This was once only available in the premium / luxury territory of conti vehicles - it's now available for B&B rides! How cool is that?

Front seats are Nappa leather with heating (no use in Singapore). Thankfully there's also ventilated with massage functions on the front seats - so will be useful here in Singapore.

The front passenger seat comes with an extended leg support with zero gravity functionality to chill out.

The EX-60 is configured as a rear wheel drive vehicle with a 190kW motor. Mazda's famous ride and handling tuning is going to make this a driver's car.

CATL announced a new partnership with Changan Mazda to jointly build NEVs based on its CIIC (CATL Integrated Intelligent Chassis) skateboard chassis. Means the battery is integrated and forms part of the vehicle's overall rigidity structure - should be able to get five starts in NCAP rating.

Since CATL's batteries has met GB 38031-2025, which requires the high voltage battery system to prevent a fire and explosion even during thermal runaway events. The no fire battery standard is set to take effect on 1-July-2026. It mandates that all high voltage batteries pass a thermal diffusion test where they must not catch fire or explode, and any smoke generated must not harm vehicle occupants.

Boot space is a bit limited at 350L and grows to 2036L when the rear seats are folded down.

The EV version gets a 126L frunk.

Looking forward to seeing this land in Malaysia/Singapore. It will sell well if Eurokars don't get too greedy and price is right.

Impressive test results on the EZ-60 frame by China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC) here: https://carnewschina.com/2025/09/14/mazda-ez-60-named-among-chinas-top-10-safest-and-strongest-car-bodies-ahead-of-launch/. The EZ-60 comes equipped with nine airbags, including long side curtain airbags and a central airbag to reduce secondary impact risk in side collisions.

It underwent a sequence of trials, including a 110 km/h offset frontal collision between two cars, a rollover from a 35-meter vertical drop, and a 30-minute immersion test following impact. Mazda reported that the passenger compartment maintained integrity, restraint and airbag systems responded, and the battery pack remained stable without short circuit or fire.

Mazda said the suspension and braking systems have undergone extended endurance testing equivalent to more than 10 years of use. Good enough for one CoE cycle!

The EZ-60 is scheduled to launch officially on 26-Sep-2025 in China - so not long to wait. Looking forward in seeing the international version called the CX-6e.
