Altis vs Axio

? I learnt here that the Altis is the G10. So I'm now confused.

 

Oh dear Please don't trust hearsay, especially guesswork from a forum!

 

Here's the accounting for the difference between the JDM(G9) Corolla and Altis:

 

"According to Sakae Kitazawa, the chief engineer of this car, the Corolla Altis was developed alongside the standard Japanese model that used to be sold here. The reason for developing two variants of the Corolla sedan is quite simple. In the export markets, with the demise of the Corona in the late 90s, there is nothing between the Corolla and the Camry. In Japan however, there are many mid-sized models in between these two best-sellers, and this meant that the specifications for the Japanese Corolla sedan was for a smaller, more compact family car. For the export markets however, the Corolla needed to be larger and more luxurious, at least half a class bigger than the Corolla."

Essentially, the Altis is a JDM Rolla with a bigger nose and butt, to make people think it's larger overall. And Singaporeans being Singaporeans, they believed it, despite the two cars having an identical wheelbase and interiors. Longer overhangs by themselves are supposed to make the car more "upmarket" and "luxurious"??

 

Now for the new Rolla:

 

"The new Corolla Axio, as the 10th generation Corolla sedan..."

Oh so the Altis was not consider any generation model in Toyota since G9 = Corolla and here comes the new G10 = Axio. It is fair to think of that as G9 and G10 are all made in Japan while Altis is made in Thailand so definitely not the same range of their cars.

Altis still qualifies as G9 since it's mechanically identical with the JDM G9. After all, 'G' just denotes the generation of chassis.

Ya, still remember when they launched Altis, it started off as just Altis but later decided to put back the word "Corolla" so that it belong to the same family as G9 Corolla.

Totally wrong. The G9 corollas in SG area all made in Japan. Only from the Corolla Altis then SG start to see it being made in Thailand. The G10 is Altis and G11 is Axios.

 

you are totally totally wrong.

 

2000, G9 was launched in Japan. It reached our shores early 2001.

late 2002, facelift for G9 released and it reached our shores too.

late 2003, another facelift was launched but BM decided not to import the JDM G9 and started imports from THAILAND which also manufactures the G9 (same platform, interior, just a different exterior styling with a different name- corolla ALTIS).

 

when we started getting the altis, it wasn't exactly and all new model. it was just a facelifted thai G9. Thailand started manufacturing the G9 in 2001 and Malaysia started importing them too.

 

so, at the present moment, Singapore have both the G9- altis and the G10- axio on sale. G10 is through PI while G9 is from BM. why does BM still sell the G9? this is because production for new models usually start later in Thailand. The G10 from Thailand is expected to arrive late next year or early 2008 (because the Thais would need time to tweak the original design and study the car to see what changes neeed to be made to suit the asian market).

What was described above not necssary avail as what the PIs bring in now. One of the higher priced PI could hav the higher end type.

If really all the 14 are avail, probably could push the price surpass Civic 1.6.

uumm... 2008 make sense...since current model is from nippon, they need sometimes to roll in thai production line and 1+yr for all the setup work and start rolling out a car from thai plant is consider very good and smooth line transfering...

 

so, just nice..... i will wait for it since 2008 is 5th yr of my ride......

Ya....Axio looks good, new facelift. Duno why ppl still says this car looks ah pek.

 

If the FC specs is true, i'll surely get this car in 2008.

they will need to clear the existing stock of altis from the thai factory first before bringing in the axio.
