Apollo 1st Gear December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 (edited) HP staff is supposed to contact u within 2 weeks. i would suggest u ask if u can buy ram on ur own. ie u can open casing. acer is cool to this, but not sure abt HP. then u use the $$ to either upgrade the CPU or buy 3 years warranty lor. ohya.. they did give u a piece of white contract document with HP written over it. tat's the most impt letter u need to keep to pass to the HP staff. Kb27 Supersonic December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 HP has warranty sticker on the chassis so you can't open it to install 3rd party parts like RAM as you like without making the warranty void. This is how they keep warranty and make sure you only buy from them.
Ah_liang Clutched December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 I'm not too good with laptops but can I upgrade the harddisk and ram myself. I've send in my application about a week ago, starhub haven't contact me yet. How long is the waiting time?
Sdexxxxd 2nd Gear December 4, 2006 Author Share December 4, 2006 Thanks...I found the answer already... anyway just upgraded to the 19" monitor...top up needed $289..
Kb27 Supersonic December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 If it's HP, chances are you can't upgrade the hardisk or ram even if you know how..bcoz of the warranty sticker. You'll break the seal trying to upgrade and void the warranty. So the best is to go for whatever upgrade they provide, otherwise, you have to wait till the warranty period (I think is 1 yr) is over, before you can upgrade by yourself. Waiting time depends, usually up to one month bcoz of the demand. Wait patiently or call them every now and then.
Ah_liang Clutched December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 their warranty sucks big time mann ... only 90 days limited warranty thats why I'm thinking of doing it myself but is it possible needs some expert advice here.
Rb26dett Clutched December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 if its 90days warranty only then i might suggest wait till the warranty period is over then do the upgrades. i recontract my 6500(12000) at sitex and got the lappy promo with 40bucks sushi voucher 150bucks off the upgrade(which i intended to go for the 3136model) and also sign up for the desktop promo as i wanted the desktop as my dedicated bittorrent system.will be doing some upgrades as i;ve had lotsa spare rams and cards.but most likely after the 90days warranty period. Beaver 2nd Gear December 4, 2006 Share December 4, 2006 After you signed up, Starhub will email you hp registration website within 3 days. But u can only go up to HP webbie to choose your upgrade option after 8 days. Then HP will contact you within 3 working days for confirmation and payment etc.... I am now in the phase of waiting for HP to call me, today will be the 2nd working day, hope they will call me and I will see what happen next. The only weird thing during registration @ HP webby is there is no warranty option, hope when HP call me, they will have the option to do it. 90 days warranty really sucks and extented warranty really a necessary. Sdexxxxd 2nd Gear December 5, 2006 Author Share December 5, 2006 hi thanks for the reply. Did you go for the Desktop as well? Any upgrades? I took the $149 upgrade + upsize the monitor.... The basic model really cmi, i think
Kb27 Supersonic December 5, 2006 Share December 5, 2006 You should be able to upgrade hardisk and ram by yourself. It depends on the built of the notebook. I used Dell so I don't know how accessible the HP is. Usually, there are some screws to remove a plastic cover and replace the hardisk to a higher capacity. I doubt there is space for a 2nd hardisk. For ram, sometimes the notebook is easy enough to put in extra. Otherwise, you might to remove the whole cover to replace existing ram. Take HP specs as a guide and see how much hardisk space and ram, it offer at the top end. It is definitely more difficult to upgrade a notebook than a desktop due to the space constraint. Beaver 2nd Gear December 5, 2006 Share December 5, 2006 Yeap, took the desktop one, I am going for the 3 years warranty and no other upgrade as I am doing a recontract for my dad and the basic is good enuf for him. I was thinking of upgrading the monitor to LCD but feel that the cost is too high after comparing to Singtel package, Singtel upgrade is only @ $139 for 19" LCD. I regretted for doing the recontract for my dad but it was done b4 I found the deal from singtel, their package is alot better.
W13ng Neutral Newbie December 5, 2006 Share December 5, 2006 hi....any idea starhub or singtel deal is better?? Pls advise which service provider to sign for if i wanted the desktop?
Sdexxxxd 2nd Gear December 5, 2006 Author Share December 5, 2006 actually i am on Singnet now, but i thought of jump ship to Starhub as i heard the service by Starhub is better, plus they give u free speed upgrades.. as to the Singnet promo of $139 upgrade to 19" monitor, what was the base monitor that they provided? maybe originally they were giving a LCD already. dont forget that Singnet monthly subscription is $63 (for the 5Mbps) compared to starhub $58 (for the 6.5Mbps). Apollo 1st Gear December 5, 2006 Share December 5, 2006 better? actually all u need is 512kbps, but if u need proper streaming tv, then it should b 1500kbps. anything more is a total waste of $$. so let set the base price of $40 (singnet) as target. do u need extras? if u pay $15 more u get a basic p.c. (then again most pple dun need one now) mobility is the way to go. otr a 32" lower resolution LCD. if u pay $30 more (starhub) u get a laptop. but then again, r u overstretching for a 12MBPS line? i went for starhub basically becos i've got rid of my laptop before warranty was over, i took cash position, and for the higher speed. it didn't really matter to me. becos i take it as paying $30 to own a laptop. otherwise, if i do not recontract, i am already paying $15 more then others. so... do ur sum.
