Gauges

Neutral Newbie

Hi, need some advice on the above. I know gauges are more for decorative purpose if you're not driving a sports car, whatsoever. In fact, there are sport cars out there that do not have gauges in their ride. However, I am thinking of fixing up few gauges like oil temp, oil pressure and voltmeter for my 307. Defi meters do not have a voltmeter and in terms of pricing, it cost a bomb too.

Is it advisable to go for defi look-alike meters since only myself and friends sitting in my car would be looking at it? My only concern is that non-defi meters are made in taiwan and may not last??? I don't really need very accurate readings too as I know I may not even be looking at them all the time... only once in a while. More of a chic factor.

Any advise or comments abt non-defi meters and their reliability?

Thanks.

if you are concern about the quality, just get the real stuffs like Defi,Apexi,HKS,Blitz...etc.

though they are expensive,at least you can still transfer them to your new ride also.smile.gif

I'm using a set of gauges from Autgauge, can't comment on the other models but I must say that the voltage meter is pretty accurate after a ScangaugeII demo yesterday, was told installation affects accuracy too.

Autogauge needle is slightly below 14v with engine at idle, ScanGaugeII which gets the information directly from the ECU shows 13.8v.

If you are going for purely looks then a set of Toser gauges should fit your bill, its a Defi replica and slightly more expensive than Autogauge.

if u're going 'discreet', can go for 52mm gauges instead of 60mm.. n mount it inside the car (somewhere near the shifter, aircon, glove box.. etc.

or u can get those 1DIN 3 gauges combo type.

since precision is nt a concern, taiwan gauges are gd value for money. since they are cheap, it's easy to replace them (can DIY also, since all the wires are already laid)..

a decent set can easily last u over a yr+. Anw, by that time ur taste might prob change and u might decide to get a different model/brand/colour.. and the wirings are already there [;)]

talking abt branded gauges, accuracy aside (i think even defi is nt that accurate, if u're talking about 0.02degC type), the advantage is that they have a controller.. which makes adding in new gauges easier, and they also come with peak, warnings n memory recall.

Most accessories shop will have it, the last time I checked it was slightly more expensive than Autogauge.

If I'm not wrong, the price is some what similar to ProGauge.

There are some newer models with Defi lookalike stands and you can switch between amber and white light. [:)]

You might have to check these out,

Two of mine friends just installed the latest ProSports gauge today, its almost an identical replica of Defi.

It has opening/closing ceremony, peak warning and LED switches between amber and white.

Driving without head lights -> white LED light

Driving with head lights on -> amber LED light

Prices inclusive of installation, sender, sensor, pod cup and accessories for installation.

Friend 1, 60mm, Toyota Axio

Water temp, voltage and tachometer @ $380

Friend 2, 52mm, Toyota Vios

Water temp, voltage and vacuum @ $340

I do not know the workshop name as they were recommended by a fellow VOGS member. However, I noticed a audible cranking sound from the gauges during opening ceremony, was told its normal as both cars have it.

From what I know, installation charges cost between $20-$45 per gauge depending on quantity and gauge type.

Multiple gauges will be more expensive as more time and effort is required for rewiring and installation.

Most local accessories shops charge around the region of $300+ for a set if three gauges with installation, getting done in JB is almost 40% cheaper.
