Conventional wisdom - go for synthetics.

Also, someone once told me that the recommended change after 10K is hog-wash - it's ok for temperate climates. our weather is too hot/humid to really allow engine oil to last that long. A lot depends also on how you drive your car - if you rev hard all the time, suggest changing sooner. [thumbsup]

I will go for Synthetics. But also up to individual. My colleague preferred to use mineral oil but change it at more regularly basis. Sound logical to me too. thumbsup.gif

i also recommend synthetic..coz its better for the engine...and agree that changing at 10K for those who rev their engine hard is not advisable... [thumbsup]

IMHO, you should stick to minerals until 5K.

during this period, periodically rev up higher than normal driving but only for short bursts, this is to make sure your rings settle in properly. minerals will help the settling in better. after that then use syns.

this seems to be the common way. i dont have any links at hand. do a search on engine breaking in on the internet.

If your next servicing is just 4000km away, you can use mineral oil. IMO, using a synthetic now will be a waste of money if you's gonna change oil soon. You might want to consider synthetics after that.

Cheers!

It's relatively safe to go mineral till 5k, even if you hi-rev your engine with mineral it's fine. Mineral breaks down quicker than Syns but with regular oil change using mineral is not a big disadvantage.

I suggest like Mike mentioned, go with mineral till your 5k servicing then switch to Syn and extend your oil change intervals to 10k comfortably [;)]

Hi, just went for my 10K servicing (actually clocked 8700K only) and changed to synthetic oil. Improvement in performance was noticeable - gear change was much smoother (less jerk). Only question is the FasFlo or FastFlo syn. oil used by Tan Chong. Anyone knows anything about this? Also viscosity is 40.

If I'm not wrong, it is a 10W40. Driving a new Toyota? You should change to a 0W20 oil. Latest oil diet going on now. Marked FC gains. Apparently any modern car is able to take it. The new 0W20 syn oils are very very shear resistant and as good as a 10W40.

Check with Ken4 for this new engine oil "Atkins Diet". [:)]

Yep, think it is a W40 oil .. not toyota but sunny. Still not so adventurous yet .. anyway, quite happy with the smoothness now. btw, quick check .. 10K servicing supposed to be free .. I always thought they'd change to a 'suitable' oil which includes mineral -> synthetic. Was surprised I had to top up the difference. Was I fleeced?

sure or not ...I once only change at 20k +, after 1yr of driving, & the engine was still running fine before the oil change sly.gifsly.gifsly.gif I was driving the Alfa 33 1.7 QV during that time wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif
