The Malayan Brewery site in Alexandra Rd where the Anchorage is presently.

There used to be a cement bridge across Alexandra Road linking the brewery and buildings across the road.

NightSoil.jpg

Some of you who have never seen a night soil carrier and the truck used for transporting them. A familiar sight in the early days and last seen in the late 70s.

Yes, the night soil carrier would go around the household with two empty carriers balanced on a bamboo pole over his shoulder every few days to replaced the full carriers. Accidents did happen. I remember once, while staying at Clarke St, the night soil carrier man lost his balance, while walking down a steep flight of stair. He came tumbling down with the contents of the carriers spilled all over the stairs. The occupants on that floors had a hard time cleaning up the smelly mass. [laugh][laugh]

Yup...And you remember the old run-down shops and houses where the current Alexandra Village stands. We bought our first TV there in 1973.
