CTE conundrum

this question has been bugging me for years so i reckon i'll gather what you guys think...

 

why does traffic on lane 1 (rightmost) on the CTE come to a complete halt many times enroute from AMK ave 5 to PIE exit?

 

could it be some drivers forgot to put in their cashcards, thus stopping to do so, or some people are trying to fool the gantry by driving ultra-slow just before the gantry?

Everyone from the left is cutting to the rightlane.

 

It happens even during non-erp hrs on CTE amk ave 1 area..

this is the section of the CTE where are the ppl living in AMK come to join the CTE.. those from Hougang areas oso use AMK Ave 5 entry to CTE, plus ERP gantry is just ahead after AMK Ave 5.

Such 'jam' always happen near to exit/entrance.

Bacause many people like to move Immediately to the right most lane if they join the expressway.

Likewise MANY idiots like to take the very last second to switch lane from 1st to the 3rd lane just at the exit point.

 

The problem is make worst recently when Lorries/pickups/vans are conditioned to used the 2nd or 1st lane, since in a morning rush hour...the speed is around 70km/hr. So technically they are about to use anylane when the traffic is slowed down.

There is a phenomenon known as a "Phantom Jam". Sadly this essential piece of knowledge is not included in the academia of learner drivers.

Braking at 1st lane, for their last min squeeze into middle lane (mostly exit CTE) should be another...

If every car do not tail gate, keep a safe distance from the car infront and just gently cruise along with the flow without excessive acceleration or braking, the traffic will ease out itself. Reason why traffic grind to a halt is because of kia-si drivers keep on stepping brakes or selfish drivers who do not give way to cars changing lanes.

Indeed. It may not be obvious but road traffic is a good reflection of what/how life is. All suffering and pain are caused by our own collective actions bouncing off the environment and each other, in the dimensions of space and time. E.g. we may lose our temper at a taxi driver who had cut abruptly into our lane and therefore we flash our headlights and sound our horn at him. He in turn gets angry and lashes out at another driver. If you can visualise this, you will see this going round and round in the system even after the source of the anger has exited the system.

In our case here in Sing, I think the above is the main reason. In addition to that, in some location, it is also because the entrance and exit are close and one after another. So you could imagine how the cars go criss crossing.

 

During rush hour when I know there is definitely a jam,

 

At CTE, I would use the 3rd lane then slowly filter into 1st lane

 

At Lornie road and Adams road, I would use 3rd lane then slowly filter into 1st lane

 

At ECP, I will use 3rd lane all the way

 

 

Maybe there are many people like me and we caused the jam.

In the rush for time, many forgot we share the road. Nowadays, we do not just see people fighting for space on road, we see them doing the same with trolleys in supermarkets, queues for condos, walking in a crowded shopping centre, travelling on an escalator. Disgrace.

this is in large part due to the poor driving by A MINORITY of road users in that stretch.

I've seen too many culprits in action to justify my statement.

sort of concretizes what i suspected... if everyone maintains a nice gap, cars (not hoggers) can change lanes without fear of causing a braking domino effect behind.

Let's assume we are tasked with the job to help prevent tail-gating, how many possible solutions can you think?

 

Here are some of what I feel can be attempted:

 

a. education - create awareness among drivers of this phenomenon

b. punishment - clamp down on tail-gating through aggressive enforcement

c. technology - utilise cutting-edge technology to eliminate tail-gating

 

Each of these can be further broken down e.g. technology - RF, video surveillance, sonar.

 

Anyone game to volunteer to form a group to kick-start this process of brainstorming and subsequently getting LTA interested enough to act upon the suggested solutions?
