Ms_tan Neutral Newbie June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 Why is our govt encouraging us to have more babies & yet they do nothing to help the parents? Baby bonus can't help much. I think our govt if given comparison between population via $$$, they will choose $$$. And the way the treat maids are far to much. Employers are at the losing end. Maids are at win-win situation in any circumstances. ↡ Advertisement
Hiphiphoray 6th Gear June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 (edited) The baby bonus sure aint working....judging by the number of kids my office collegues have. Most have only 1, the better ones have 2 kids. Very very few have 3 kids and above. In addition, a good majority(at least 50%) are singles with no intension of marrying and married couples not wanting children. Baby shortage is a very very real problem which our govt is ignoring. Reng Neutral Newbie June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 Having more babies is a personal thing,so gahment really cant do much, what they done already done. If they dun treat the maids well, then, s'pore women will need to stay at home looking after children and i think many dun like it, that's why. If they dun treat the maids well, then, s'pore women will need to stay at home looking after children and i think many dun like it, that's why. I don't agree wif this. If govt willing to punish the maids for what they've done - abuse kids, murder, stolen things, pregnant, many of the women still can out to work. Cos our govt has really wake up to send the maids to jail & this can make the maids really wake up & know what are they doing & what they will face if they commit crime in Singapore. Unlike now, by letting them off even if they killed, many maids wont workout for the employers. So no more babies, then the population in SG will really while more & more maids will have the increased in amount for the crime they have committed. Chimp Clutched June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 I think Singaporean and Hongkongers have the same mentality: (read in Cantonese) 叫我生就生,咁我唔係好无面?

Icekitten Clutched June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 And the way the treat maids are far to much. Employers are at the losing end. Maids are at win-win situation in any circumstances. I disagree that maids have an advantage. Employers feel stressed because they usually pay a sizeable percentage of their salary for a maid to help to look after their kids and household. Typical Singaporean mentality, they want to get their money's worth from what they pay. Maids, on the other hand, feel stressed because they are homesick and because they are doing far more work than what they are paid for every month. As a result, they become resentful, depressed and all the nonsense starts. And the discrepancy lies in the maid levy. If the amount of maid levy paid is given to the maid instead, she will be happier, do her work better and the employer will in turn be happier, can focus better on her work, and eventually employees work well, company does well, economy does well. So who really wins? Think carefully, not the maid, not the employer. Either way, whether the maid levy stays or is scrapped, they will still win. It's just that collecting the maid levy is the 'safer' way of boosting reserves rather than going the indirect way, involving a gamble on human nature and collecting it thru taxes. Watwheels Supersonic June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 (edited) Maybe govt should talk to SG POOLS and let married couples take turns to strike TOTO 1st prize. Sure got enough. Aiya during my parents time same lah, they are also doubtful about the future cos $$$ not enough. Look at us now. All grown up and is our turn to worry. No matter how much they give also not enough one lah. My mother kenna fined for giving birth to me. Now they have to return it by giving baby bonus. How ironic. Chimp Clutched June 5, 2007 Share June 5, 2007 On the topic of maid and maid levy, a lot of people here does not realized the quality of maid coming to Singapore is of lower quality. Why? If you are the maid, will you want to come to Singapore and get S$300/month if you have a choice of getting S$600 in Hong Kong or Taiwan? The more capable ones will go to Hong Kong/Taiwan... and the CMI ones will come here. Singapore maid's employer pay essentially the same as what the maids employers pay in Hong Kong and Taiwan but getting a much lower quality maid.
