How thick is factory clear coat?

I am trying to remove part of a long scratch on the passenger and driver's doors, which seems to be caused by a sharp object. &$*%@#

 

I used a 1000 grit commercial sand paper to wet sand the affect area, and wax it. The results seems to be acceptable for a noob. But I worry I would over sand the clear coat off that protects the body paint.

 

How thick is usually factory clear coat on the car's body? Especially Nissan?

You can try to touch-up with a layer of clear coat of paint.

Then you'll be getting a haze on the wet sanded area won't you?

 

You're supposed to machine polish after wetsanding to restore the gloss

Yup, I do get haze on the wet sanded area. But after a little waxing, the shine is some what there. Maybe not as good as the pros but it looks acceptable to me. Perhaps more waxing for longer duration will work like a machine polisher? Just need more time I guess.

Maybe there might be scratches, but I don't see them under the sun light. I just worry scratching the paint work badly, thus using the fine 1000 grit sand paper. Could have finish it with 2000 grit but will take more time. I just worry that I will over sand the clear coat. This is my first time doing such things.

Hi bro,

 

Waxing for sure won't be able to remove the wetsanding haze cos it doesn't have abrasives to finish the paint to its original gloss state. Could you be confusing polishing with waxing?

 

So far all of the wetsanding jobs I've seen/read require machine polishing to finish the job properly..

Perhaps bro. But I only have wax in the car, so I just made use of what I had. Taking a glance, there isn't any haze. Maybe under strong sunlight, we may see it. I guess it looks ok for now. Thanks for the head up bro~

i think after u use the sand paper, u need a pro. to buff it off for u if not u may have a problem in that area ( scratches ) because i think the 1000 sand paper very rough.
