Anyone in Marine line?

Anyone knows how is a pontoon design like?

The recent news said that they were suck under the pontoon that cause the disaster.

How does it suck?

The undertow occurs only when there is high flow rate through a constricted area. Floating pontoons don't create constriction.

There are various types of pontoons in the market. Which type are u referring to? Pontoon is basically a temporary floating platform. It can be made from plastic materials or metal materials.

After reading ST u will see that the river is so much bigger than our SG River(canal) .

 

It's the whirl pool that suck them down, not the pontoon. They maybe trapped unconcious under the pockets of the underside of the pontoon. The floating platform does not suck.

 

The whirl pool may have been caused when the strong incoming current hit an obstruction like the pontoon and the water start to spin.

wat makes u say they 'acted garang'?

by not putting on life vests or by attempting to row back on their own?

I wouldn't say they acted garang for both reasons.

They had their reasons and sadly only when things happen do people take more precautions. But no need to be too harsh.

1) Young men (early 20s to early 30s)

2) Raging hormones (yeah I'm 31 and I jerk off everyday so yeah I know about the raging hormones part)

3) Did not wear life vests and attempt to row back on their own even though they can see (with their eyes) that the river was wild at that time

 

Are these not reasons to conclude that they acted gung-ho/garang?

i've been underneath a pontoon before while free diving and I can tell u it is not easy getting out, much less these guys who were not prepared and facing such a huge pontoon. The reports said the size of it was about a basketball court. If one panics underwater, trying to hold one's breath and find the way out can sure be a challenge.

wud u categorise one who dun put on a seat belt and getting into an auto accident acting garang? I wud tink comfort as the reason and not acting garang. If the law did not state the need here, Im sure we'll see lots of ppl not putting on the belts.

 

Obviously wearing of life vests for rowing constricts movements so that i feel will be the main reason, and not that of trying to look cool.

Errr...And if those people who did not put on seat belts got into a fatal accident, what would you say?

 

I know I cannot speak for you, and even though I don't think it, I dare say that some people will think: "See!... got seat belt don't wear ... *sigh*"

 

I can agree if they decided not to wear the life vests based on a strategic decision, but rowing back on their own after the race instead of waiting to be towed back wasn't exactly necessary either.

 

Whatever way we see it, let's all keep in mind that 5 lives were lost here in this accident. Let's all be more sensitive in our choice of words and tone of discussion....

A pontoon is basically a floating platform.

 

The basic design is just a metal box. Just like a rectuagular box..

 

from what i hear from DIVERS:

 

Sometimes when we see the water surface is very claim, but in some places the underwater urrent is very strong. Which means if u fall inside, the underwater current will just suck u in and sweep u away...
