If you're lucky, and if there's a resident instructor there you might even get 1-to-1 [thumbsup]

But your friend does have a point there. Ultimately it depends on what you want - quality instruction or your precious holiday time.

From my experience, you can get up to 1:8 ratio (used to be 1:12 even!) on a local dive trip (though these days many are doing 1:6 or 1:4 - which I'd definitely recommend), and you'll normally get 4-5 dives in the sea - a bit like a conveyor belt system - which is fine if you're the type who can pick up things easily.

But what if you have problems mastering some of the drills or you're not confident in some of the skills? Given the tight weekend timing (taking into acct number of pax, transportation etc.), you may not get the chance if you need more practice - but they'll probably still pass you and ask you to join their next trip [sly]

At the end of the day, regardless of where you go, it boils down to the instructor who teaches you. If you do go local, I'd recommend a reputable dive shop which is personal enough but NOT TOO FAMOUS (read: crowded, rotate instructors throughout your course) so that your quality of instruction is still of an acceptable standard.

If you have the chance, I'd recommend you sit down and have a chat with your prospective instructor and see if you're comfortable with him/her before you sign up. Try to make sure that the instructor you chat with is REALLY the one who will be teaching you on the actual day!
