Improving Braking Performance

Find my car braking to be rather "bei chiak" at times. This is especially so when braking from moderate/high speed. Feeling rather uncomfortable with it. Any suggestion to improve my car's braking prowess?

Thank you

Hi Keat, welcome to MCF [sunny]

How old is your car? Or when's the last time you had brake service and pad replacement?

Weak brakes could be a sign of glazed brake pads and if that's the case then the pads need to be changed or if there's still plenty of pad left, grinded. [;)]

My car is only 1 month old. I can think of a few possibities for my brake "problem".

1) Me still getting use to the heavier car

2) The brake pad is grazed, but I did gentle braking for the first 1000k leh...

3) The brake is over servoed? Initial pedal travel, brakes is very weak.

Thank you

maybe u can start by trying out some of the initial steps that i have tried on my car...braking power definitely improved [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup]

1. change brake hose to steel braided

2. change your brake pad to slightly higher performance (mintex is reasonably cheap, which i'm using)

3. change your brake fluid to DOT 5

If still not chiak as u said, i suggest u have to upgrade your rotor and brake calliper to 4 pot....which i don't really see a necessity unless u driving a PERFORMANCE car

If you got a conti car, they tend to have long brake pedal travel so have to live with it.

As for Turtlekar's advise they are good tips, do note that if you plan to upgrade your brake fluid use DOT 5.1, NOT DOT 5! DOT 5 is silicon based fluid and not suitable for our normal cars as the seals in the brake system cannot take it.

Anyone change their rear brake drums to discs? Does it improve breaking significantly? Is it feasible?

Wonder what is the cost of this transformation.

Hehehe...don't know what to say about my driving...not very good I guess...was actually thinking of upgrading brakes to improve those split second moments when you need to stop exactly where it is....

Was wondering for my car which is using brake drums at the back, when we change to brake discs, does it involve major overhaul in the brake system. Or is it just like replacing parts, as simple as that?

I think I do recall an article somewhere saying that it is not advisable to change drums to discs as the car is not advised to be modified in this manner.
