Madarmour Neutral Newbie June 18, 2003 Share June 18, 2003 For the clunk sound, you should have your rear brakes checked. Maybe it's time to replace the pads. Otherwise you can remove the rear wheels and try to see how much pad remains, if it is visible. Change if it is 3mm or less. You may want to lubricate the springs too. However, don't overdo it as you don't want to have oil dripping on the drum itself. This could just solve your clunking problem. Don't know what oil to use for lubrication? Try a bit of your leftover engine oil. For the uneven wear, I think your alignment is off. BTW, brake wear and misalignment affects relatively new cars too, not to mention that your car is 12 years old. No mechanical part will last forever. Have them checked as early as possible as the brake is a safety issue and the alignment is a handling issue, which to me, is high up on the 'must work properly' list. Just my $0.02. Cheers! Sky8807 1st Gear June 19, 2003 Share June 19, 2003 Been noticing that whenever I release my brake (not the brake handle), I hear an unusual dull clunk sound at the rear of the car.The sound is similar to that of slowly accelerating while the handbrake is up. Detecting unusual is difficult. However, rear brake drum type which uses a piston cylinder to expand the horse shoe(brake pad) might be jammed after a few years. This can cause the noise and also the sound u heard. If that is the case, u will also experience poor braking distance. It doesn't repeat each time I step the brake and release and move, but it happens about 70% of the time. Could it be a sticky brake pad in the drum or the drum itself? Only way to confirm is to remove the brake drum and inspect. Any mechanic can do the job. After I changed my tyres, I noticed the rear left wheel to have uneven wear and tear...ie botak patches around the inner rim. Anyone experienced this kind of problem before ? Also should I go to a specialist mech or any mech will do ? A wheel alignment check should detect any damage or defect in the alignment department. Uneven wear can also be caused by shock absorber that are already worn as well as unbalance rear tyre fitted. Yes, rear tyre need to be balance also. Hope my opinion help. Ace_t Neutral Newbie June 20, 2003 Author Share June 20, 2003 Thanx gonna get it checked soon. Guess I'd have to keep the car for a few more mths for wait n see. I suspect COE might be heading skywards. Thinking next mth will go higher, now that 145 ppl had golden handshakes of upto 25mths in severance pay. Whoa... No offense to those who are in this category. My granduncle took that option after 20 yrs in the bank... wife no need to work, go on multiple holidays a year, new house , new car (fully paid), paid for children's wedding... list goes on.
