But there are some genuine sleeping cases.

There was once when i fell asleep on the train. When i woke up, i found a pregnant lady standing right in front of me. I immediately gave her my seat and she gave me the disgusted face as if i was pretending to be sleeping. [thumbsdown][thumbsdown][thumbsdown]

Dunno about you brudders but I always give up my seat to the elderly and pregnant women.

Most of the time the elderly would thank me but the expectant women always never acknowledge the fact that I gave up my seat to them. They think it is their right to have a seat and I owe them that. [sweatdrop]

I'm always grateful to those who gave up their seat to my wife when she was expecting. [thumbsup]

Personally, "Ask or don't ask for the seat, privilege, pay the same fare, complain" is not how I view it. Rather, from this incident, I am also disappointed in that: Why aren't those seated sensitive about the greater needs for others and be automatic to offer their seats?

So what makes you think, others do not need the seat more than her? So was she sensitive when she complained that no one gave up their seats?

I personally suffer from gout and when a attack comes, it is damn pain.... sitting will make it better as i am not giving any pressure on my leg. But while seated, i look like a normal healthy person.

So who decides who has greater needs?

PS: I do give up my seat to a needy but it is always a privilege and never a MUST.

Each individual decides who has greater need for the seat.

If you have genuine reasons (but not apparent to others - as per the example you gave) and feel you have greater need to keep on to your seat, that's fine. Go ahead.

For this incident, I just cannot believe ALL of those seated have greater needs than her.

My view is this:

If we have to be asked for a favour before our own "sensitivity" or "care for people" triggers us off to offer our seat, isn't that a sad thing?

Whether the other party accepts/rejects your offer is a different matter.

That being said, I don't agree with her suggestion to penalise people for not giving up seats. As most of the people here said it correctly, we don't owe anyone anything. Everyone pays for the fare etc etc.

But it is an assumption on your or the Stomper part and would be unfair to those seated if they do have greater or equal needs.

Ya man. I had quite a similiar experience, many yrs back i offered my seat to a pregnant lady however she gave me a disbelief looks and thinking "sure nor not? so nice" even without saying a simple "Thank You" [:|]

Did she even open up her precious mouth to ask politely or not?

Straight away condem those who never automatically give up their seats to satisfy her personnal needs.

If she writes that, after asking 3 guys and ALL refused to give up their seats, then I say she got the rights to complain!

Penalise riders who do not give up seats to those in need

Ms Chung Hui Lin

I had a very bad experience on Tuesday morning while travelling on the MRT.

I am five months pregnant with twins. I got onto the train at Tampines MRT Station and, as usual, all the seats were taken. I walked to the centre of the car and stood in front of three gentlemen.

Their eyes were wide open when I got in but, after a while, all of them dozed off.

One got off at Bedok, but his seat was quickly grabbed by a woman who was standing beside me.

I was shocked by her inconsiderate action.

I eventually got a seat when someone else alighted.

Later, three other pregnant women boarded the train at Raffles Place, but nobody bothered to give up their seats.

I got up and offered one of them my seat.

I am saddened by people who seem to be getting more self-centred and inconsiderate these days.

Signs on the trains asking commuters to give up their seats to pregnant women or elderly passengers are not effective.

Maybe SMRT should consider penalising those who do not give up their seats to those who need them more.

Hahahahahahaha! This is pathetic! No wonder generations after generations of S'poreans are getting more and more kiasu! Why? Because even the fighting for a seat starts when the baby is inside the womb! No wonder when they grow up, they will fight over every darn thing! Hahahahhahahah! Singaporeans! Very Civilized Indeed!!!

Wahahahaha! Yeah man! If you want the wife to have kids, make sure she can travel in a car or at least a cab eh? [;)]

That's the Singaporean chinese mentality? Make sure that for one kid, the kid get the best or else don't get a kid at all! That's why, a few generations down the road, the little place is going to get swarmed by the brownies! Hahahhaha!

I should be thankful that I don't have to stay here when that happens. Good luck to you guys! [laugh]

Seriously, I simply bewildered at how uncouth the people here are! Come on, where's your f*cking graciousness???? All dead is it?????????? Why do you make things so miserable for your own people??????? Is it because you were all BORN miserable???????

I really cry to see what the chinese have become in this supposedly more civilized country? I really feel sad to see you all like this....

I made this assumption - It cannot be that ALL those seated there have greater needs than her.

Is it a fair assumption? How many times have we heard of similar cases as such? Do you still genuinely think it is so coincidental all the time?

Also I am not accusing of anyone in particular who sat there. I am in no position to do so as I do not know if they really have greater needs than the pregnant lady. Only they themselves know.
