Bro, if you do not intend to use this 2nd ride which you are going to purchase til the end of it's COE then it would be advisable for you to purchase one with a lower COE [nod][nod][nod]

reverse logic leh

I think when buying 2nd hand vehicle, you should also try to check and confirm the paper value of the COE and OMV as advertised. My friend just bought a 2nd hand OPC car from a dealer in Turf City, but the actual COE value was lower than as advertised ($12001 vs $10510).

When asked about the difference, dealer tried to say they advertised the COE value based on estimation, then gave all sorts of excuses to say COE value does not matter as its only on paper and they are unable to check the actual COE value plus all sorts of reasoning and excuses. Then finally admitted its their mistake in the advertisement, but nothing he can do, keep saying the selling price is already a very good deal.

Buyer friend LL had to proceed with the deal due to agreement, deposit and lack of knowledge, etc....

Not sure if my understanding that paper value of COE is a consideration on the price and whether this is a common practice to "estimate" COE value. Comments welcomed. Cheers......

i dunno whether ppl know abt cat E coe or not.......the coe rebate is base on the actual category if the vehicle's coe is cat E.

so beware those dealer who advertised the high coe figure but never mention it is cat E. Check out the actual category coe price of the same reg date and calculate base on this figure as usually cat E is higher.

...find the month/yr car registered...then go sgcarmart and look at car register at the same period...u will be very very close to the actual....unless there is a sudden $2 that kind of things.....coz twice COE monthly bidding mah

the other way is to get the dealer to print out the vehicle parf value from onemotoring....this one confirm accurate on the dot

but izzit true when the sgcarmart they put monthly for the car is $195?.

i tink when they say that monthly is $XXX, it probably means u have to take the max loan period and at the highest interest rate, which could be 7-8%, which could be frightening if u compute the effective rate.

usually the $XXX quoted is too onerous on the buyer.

i haven not purchased any OPC before, so I cant give u any real experience on tat. It shld not be too different from purchasing a normal plate car.

I would think most impt is check condition of car, like bringing to STA or Vicom, or bring to ur trusted workshop b4 buying. No testing, no purchase. Another thing is the paper value of the car. Usually 2nd hand car dealers will mark up by >10k from the paper value.

Check around from various car dealers for their interest rate packages. I understand some banks give better rates if u can make a certain amt of downpayment.

Always try to find fault with the car so u can bargain down the price.

Short of buying a Chinese/Indian-made OPC, you can't get any cheaper than an OPC Picanto.

I cannot emphasize this enough - you cannot afford to comfortably own a car on your own current income. I already broke down almost all the expenses you are likely to pay. Oh yes, I didn't factor in the OPC coupons you are likely to buy. This is real cost. Not the mere $195 a month that you are paying to service the car's loan. Even if you buy the car just to park it in your carpark, it is still costing you money.

Hi. SORRY to invade this thread.. Im new here.. cant post new topic.. :(

Anyway, im planning to get a 2nd hand car. Civic esi 4A. Date registered is in 1993.

Planning to get a full loan for this as i cant really splash my pocket for this.

COE is till 2019. just renewed.

Price is 8800.

Road tax 1100.

Insurance gonna use my dad's, around 900.

What are your advice?

Should i get a brand new car? or stick with this.

As i can only come out with 700 per month for a car. And i tend to love

this civic model.

What concerns me most is the maintenance. Will it be very bad?

Is it going to be worth it..?

Please advice..

Here's my calculations..

road tax = 90 /month

insurance = 55 /month

installmonths = 80 /month

parking = 90 /month

petrol = 200 /month

Is it a wise decision? Please advice... cause i really could use a car as my job needs me to travel here and there.

Been wasting on cab fares everyday of about 25 dollars and above... =/

(edited)

The EG series Civic still looks [thumbsup] despite coming to almost 18 years old [nod]

But for rides like these, i would suggest that you looks for a Manual one unless your licence is 3A one then Boh Pian loh [:p]

Be prepared to fork out another sum for change of beltings, suspensions, fluid change & some other parts which might break down in due cause [gossip]

Maintaining an aging ride isn't easy Bro [nod]

If suay suay it's been badly abused by previous owners then you might even have to bring it to see 'Doc' aka workshop every month :wacko:

hi raytravis,

if im not wrong, lowest interest rate for COE cars are abt 3.5% (u can call the 2nd hand dealers to find out the range). So based on 3.5%, each mth's instalments will be abt $107 (im assuming 9 yrs loan).

ur parking of $90 looks like u have only take into account ur mscp carpark. U mite wan to consider other carpark charges when u go out for leisure or work purposes.

Insurance is 900 per yr, so wld be ard $75 per mth. i cant compute ur $55. Ur petrol looks ok to me, but do note that prices of petrol always like to go up.

i suggest better dont buy. take taxi, bus, mrt or whatever. you are not ready to own a car yet.

Just to give you a haeds up, when i own my 1st 'car' its a panel van in its 18yrs of service. only cost me $2000 which i paid full. That time i only making 3.5k per month

Frankly speaking,

no, i am not confident of handling a rwd car well

i know it's tail happy when modded to be drift ready,

but since i'm already here, know a thing or two,

i hope to project it that i know the consequences and i'm ready to learn.

My advise..since you're still a P-plate..why not start with a 1.6L jap/korean saloon first? to get yourself used to Singapore roads and local driver's driving style..i can tell you what little you see(and experience) while under L plate is delusional..experience is VERY important..after a few yrs driving saloon..then move on to something bigger..

When i passed driving, i started off with a 3yo Civic ES8, FWD with barely 110bhp..only recently then i move on to the 2L Civic..i can tell you, the very first time i drive it out of the showroom, it's not easy to get used to the gain in power..

Just follow this link and key in the registration number and you will be able to find out the registered COE and OMV of the car.

Transfer Fees, OMV, COE

No OMV info leh. Or did I miss it somewhere?

Another link has OMV info but requires owner's IC no.
