Net__appliance Neutral Newbie September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 You guys have probably came across this comprehensive article in motortrend... They did a series of tests on the definition of "handling" & "fun to drive" factor Have a look , quite interesting and i find quite true as my opinions and experience with some of the cars... Mazdaspeed (albeit its is a 2.3) came in higher than Civic Si... Honda fans may beg to differ ... http://www.motortrend.com/features/112_070..._car/index.html [inline 112_0706_01z+americas_best_handling+spider_web.jpg] ↡ Advertisement
Vblaster_w211 2nd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 The 2.3L engine in a light body is very different from our 1.6L variant.... Imagine the difference bet an E200 and an E350 in terms of driving feel! Both same car body, but...
Snowblind Neutral Newbie September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 (edited) Does not seem like a fair comparison as the mazda should have some body ad chassis mod to cope with the extra power. Type R should be the fair comparison. OOT The cayman's rating does seem to prove wat I have read of it. One of the best handling/fun car. Net__appliance Neutral Newbie September 14, 2008 Author Share September 14, 2008 Yes.. definitely.. but no denying the mazdaspeed prowess Singaporean (myself included) are still pretty caught up with honda .. But recently has test driven a mazda6 and is very pleasantly surprised with the quality and handling...These mazda engineers are definitely onto something.. quite interesting ..if you look at the spider chart above, Civic came in short on quite on quite a few measurements... I agree with some of the Civic verdict... Steering accuracy -Low Fun to drive - low Steering weight/feel -Low Chasis Control-High .. I really wish Civic was higher but i cannot disagree with the results...
Fcw75 Hypersonic September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 But you have to see what cars they are comparing the Civic SI to. I feel they should use the Civic Type-R too.

I really wish Civic was higher but i cannot disagree with the results... eh....Ford is major share holder of Mazda and Mazda 3 is using the Focus's platform (the MK1 iirc), that's why the handing is much better than their previous Mazda's range. I wouldn't be surprise that the Mazda 6 will have some input from Ford to have the more Conti feel in the handling
Snowblind Neutral Newbie September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 (edited) Its a fine balance between handling and ride comfort. And the civic being a normal sedan is more comfort bias. And the mazda 3 normal version is quite similar if both driven normally. Of course both seem quite sporty compared to sunny, which felt like a boat Edited September 14, 2008 by Snowblind

Shull Turbocharged September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 (edited) true..all the other cars are in the performance/sports sector.. the 2.3L Mazda3 uses a TCed 2.3L engine churning out 260+ bhp..surely the chassis and suspension will have to be tweaked to handle the increase in power.. in fact, the Civic SI prob the only family car in the comparison.. throw in a JDM Civic Type-R..and see it moves up the ranking.. Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 It is a very fair comparison! The civic si is not our version. In the US it is a sports civic. It's their version of the CTR. Think of it as a cross between the JDM CTR and euro CTR. The Si puts out 197bhp at 7800rpm, and has a 0-100 time of 6.7secs on paper. Here's a link to its website if you want to read more on it http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-si-coupe/

Shull Turbocharged September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 ohh..than that will make sense.. anyway, i still think they should use the real JDM Type R to compare..
Vblaster_w211 2nd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 Which is why this test is applicable for US, but not for us. US: Mazda 2.3L TC to US Civic Si S'pore: Mazda 1.6L to our Civic 1.6 or 1.8L (not to mention the 2L version) Of course for our context, the Civic is (subjectively) seen as a better car. Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 Not much of a diff, since the jdm ctr will have to be detuned to run in the US. The Si also has uprated handling bits as compared to the standard USDM civic, so its ok lah. Theres even a sedan version
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 Yup its not applicable i am curious though about how the 1.6 civic stacks up against the 1.6 Mz 3. I haven't read any comparisons.
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 14, 2008 Share September 14, 2008 Don't be so sure about that. This particular engine has been in wards 10 best engines for the 3rd year now.
Vtim 3rd Gear September 15, 2008 Share September 15, 2008 The new ford mondeo was tested by a magazine recently and rated quite highly. handling wise is not bad, definately in front of it's rival but power wise is a bit lacking ↡ Advertisement
