Opel Zafira 1.8, any review?

I was actually considering to buy a preowned zafira since now new cars so high. Went to test drive a 09 zafira 1.8 MTA. Like the car for it's size...not too big, not too small. Interior very spacious but don't like the factory audio player unit. The funny shape hand brake is a problem, must retract the armrest to properly engage it.

The drive was ok, but i admit must get used to the MTA gear, seems jerky and can feel it. Asked my mechanic about this car...he said it's personal preference, but he pointed out that in future if MTA gearbox got problem, repair will be costly. Also he warned me about the steering wheel...according to him, it's some kinda of hydraulic/etc (can't remember exactly) which is prone to spoilt or malfunction. He also said Opel not very popular here in singapore for passenger cars. Last time army GP car use Opel, now also pharse out already. When car brand not popular, car population will be small. So come to repair or buy spare parts sure ex cos no economy of scale.

Maybe i should reconsider and get a preowned wish instead, think safer bet. Anyone here can give some opinion or suggestion? [confused]

wish and zafira is not like apple to apple

you can not judge zafira by drive it 1-2 months.

when drive it long enough, you will feel different with wish or stream.

No doubt the Opel community is pretty small locally.

Perhaps you can post your query in the local Opel forum, might get a better feel. Agree the MTA needs getting used to.

There are ppl happy driving their 2nd/3rd Opels, along with those that will not touched it with a 10 foot pole.

Thanks for telling me about Opel Forum... I log in to check out and find out more. Quite a few owners of Opel vehicles running on MTA mentioned a number of similar problems they face. 1) actuator problem...will cause gear shift problem...1 owner of a 1.8 MTA Zafira was quoted $3200 to fix it  2) Loud engine noise...this one i think i still can bear with it. 3) Battery always go flat..even battery weak can cause gear shift problem...most of the owners change battery every year [:/] My current car drive 4 years plus then only change once.

Now I've second thoughts, some people say b'cos this MTA model quite a bit of problem that's why Opel kill it and now 2012 new launch astra, zafira...etc all running on normal auto with 1.4L but turbo.

Think i better don't backside itchy change car now...should drive my current car for 2 more years till scrap and hope COE drop by then....at that time can buy the current launched 1.4L turbo zafira preowned and save $$$ :D

Hi folks

There is a zafira model B recall in Europe and I wanted to know if there has been a recall in SG

Any owners get a letter from Opel or spoken with the agent here?

Risk of fire due to overheating a/c ventilation

Potentially getting a second hand zafira and want to check if the model is implicated

Thanks!

From personal experience of owning 2 Opel cars, 1st an Astra 1.8 Auto and a Zafira MTA and also know a friend who owns an Opel Astra MTA, never ever touch MTA!!! Especially your mileage is high. Opel auto is fine. If you really want Zafira, go for the auto one.

Bought an Opel Zafira and sold it after 3 months. MTA need a lot of getting used to and timing has to be changed every 60k km. MTA gets cranky as well after 100k km.

Likes the size, sturdy interiors and heavy doors. Hates practically everything else.
