Another alternative is burn to DVD lor ...4.7 GB of diskspace is less than $1.00 ...get those more reliable brand like Sony, Verbatim etc ...

Still worry ...burn a few copies ...

Still worry ...burn a few copies ...one copy put in the masteroom...another copy put in study room...

Still Worry .. One copy in the house ....the other put in other people house ... [laugh]

I used to do that also ... but you not scared if *touch wood* ...Sway sway kenna virus ... All 3 will kenna as all are running concurrently ?

We will never know what Virus nowadays can do ... I heard of some just caused damaged to the 1st track of your HDD ... wiped out the entire content ...or maybe just corrupt your photo files or important document ...

An external HDD i think is less prompt to it ...unless 24 hrs attached then LPPL ...

So are there any slim small 200GB portable harddisk out there?

Now they are 2.5" 320GB portable HDD on the market. Even USB flash drive also have 16GB or 32 GB coming out.

I have a very small 8GB 1.

Hmm ...not sure which cat i am in ...

I got a 20 GB HDD for storing system files, drivers and application .. (In case my laptop need to reformat)

Another 60 GB HDD for storing MP3 files

80 GB HDD for my PSP Games

160 GB for storing all my Videos and Download

320 (3.5 inch) for dumping everything in ...

Eventually still run shortage of diskspace ... Time to get a 1 TB storage i think .. [laugh]

Wah ... so many .... [sweatdrop]

I have 1TB LAN desktop network drive. To store all the data and also redundant as well.

I got a few 20 GB HDD . (Company laptop condemning) so i reused them

My 60 GB HDD is taken out from my previous faulty laptop

My 80 GB is after upgrading my current laptop to 120 GB

Bought my 160 GB for storage initally. Then bought the maxtor (320 GB)3.5 inch basic backup.

Cost wise for HDD is now relatively compare to a few months or years back as it is dropping fast . Maybe due to improving technology or market demand .

I got my 160 GB with external casing 1.5 yrs back at around 160 ++

Last comex show i went to (In june). A 320 GB or 250 GB Western Digital is selling aroung 120++ or 99 ++ (If i remember correctly.

Giant is selling a brand called Slix at around $130 for 320 GB

Slim or thick i don't there is much difference. I got about 5 - 6 various shape and branded external Casing . The difference is negliable. So far non failed on me . (Touch wood)

Unless you are in IT line . With the need to change the HDD inside often . Maybe a screwless casing would help .

But what i discover is to best get the same type of HDD with the laptop you are currently using. (Eg . Sata or IDE ) Although latest laptop now should have come in Sata . (At least when your laptop HDD failed on you . You can just pop the external one over) Save cost . [laugh]

320GB is slim type or desktop size type?

i'm using external hdds. but not very portable (chunky and need AC power source).

reason being that i use my laptop as the portable HDD [laugh]

the external ones are for my data. one maxtor onetouch 500gb and western digital 640gb.

the onetouch is for backup of my lappy. the backup software rocks and is damn convenient. just set the folders u need to backup and from then on, either auto backup or just press the button in the HDD [thumbsup]

the western digital is to backup the maxtor every few weeks. in case both maxtor and lappy go kaput. so it's a bit like a RAID system just that i am the "controller"

used to have a portable HDD but donate to my sis liao. making do with 2GB thumbdrive.

if u want to backup and don't need the portability, i feel that proper HDD with own power supply is much better. portable HDD sometimes get very hot.

Have you ever consider RAID1?

Dear all,

Just wondering how many of you are using Portable Harddisk and what size.

Those that don't have .... pleas share why.

Thanks.

depends on what you use it for..

had a 200gb maxtor which I brought 4 years back for backing up when I'm overseas.. still working until yesterday nite when I think either the casing got problem or HD failure..

HDD doesn't spin or detected when I plug it to my PC as slave.. anyone can help?

anyway, back to main topic, for the 200gb, I uses external casing which come with built in adapter and fan.. most casing have external adapter and no fan.. natural cooling..

For such setup, it's ideal for storage purpose and not meant for moving ard. and cheaper than those 2.5inch

I also have a 80GB portable type that uses USB power. good for bring around and also backup for laptops.

then there's the thubdrives for transferring of data from here to there.. rough count, I have 6 to 7 1GB thumbdrive and 2 x 4GB.. not forgetting those memory cards as well.. anyway, they come free.. so be it..

anyway, anyone can help me with a dead HD? any place to recover? I suspect the disk platter is ok, meaning stuff are ok but the power thingy is dead..

Cheers

Eventually still run shortage of diskspace ... Time to get a 1 TB storage i think .. [laugh]

working on the theory of redundancy, I'm quite afraid of using those 1TB HD.. i.e. if it die, wouldn't we be losing 1 TB worth of stuff?

Looking at my post above, I just got a 200gb dead HD.. but I'm quite lucky that I have other storage for more important photos...

but if one put all the eggs in one basket, oh my.. that will be one big chicken farm dying at the same time [sweatdrop]

in any case, price of HD is coming down every quarter.. during the last PC show, I think 1 TB can be had for less than $200

So are there any slim small 200GB portable harddisk out there?

if you want to do pure storage, then 3.5inch HD would be more cost effective and stable compared to those portable type..

of coz, you will have to live with one more powered device and how to cool down the HD..

if you want portability, then thumbdrive might be a better choice.. 8gb is getting common nowadays

nope i did not consider. from what i understand it's a system in itself with two HDD.

my system is two independent, normal external HDD. so i can either have 1.1GB total or 500GB redundant data.

what i do is for the unimportant data, i dump a single copy to the larger HDD (640gb, what a weird size). the rest of the data is backed up to two HDDs. [;)]

HDD doesn't spin or detected when I plug it to my PC as slave.. anyone can help?

you connect as USB or inside yr SATA/PATA connection ?

if usb, try a different port or casing.

if SATA/PATA try a different connector. if cannot, probably gone case. HD usually life span is around 3 yrs
