Kelpie 2nd Gear December 27, 2008 Share December 27, 2008 I observed that cars are being built larger and there are no secret receipt, either the car is being built taller or wider to create the extra space. Do you prefer the car to be wider or taller in the pursuit of spaciousness? without compromsing on look and performance? Verve 1st Gear December 27, 2008 Share December 27, 2008 i think boils down on needs, for me taller because i want to feel more spacious, for those who need to ferry 5 people and want a sedan, then wider is the way to go.
Happily1986 5th Gear December 27, 2008 Share December 27, 2008 Wider. To avoid compromising on looks. I observe that many cars nowadays have a ridiculously tip toe stance especially Japanese cars. This is most probably due to the car width tax imposed by the Japanese Ministry of Transport. This being said, some sedans look funny as well just to add on in my opinion. In terms of the dimensions. For e.g. i find the Vios to be lacking of a properly styled bonnet and boot (seems like extended bumpers to me). I surmise this is the the aftermath of a decision to increase cabin space while keeping overall car length much of less the same.

Regards, depends on the type of car.. if it's SUV type.. then higher.. but there's the CG to worry coz higher means less stable.. if it's sedan.. a wider track will means difficulty in parking, require upgrade in tyres.. and try asking those edix people how they park their cars... a car need to be built in proportion.. sadly cars like latio, city, SX4, etc.. are just.. sigh.. and not forgetting some of their china counterparts.. yuck
macrosszero Turbocharged December 27, 2008 Share December 27, 2008 Tall narrow cars you see on the road: Perodua Kembara, Nissan Sylphy, Hafei Minz, Suzuki APV. Wide low cars you see on the road: Lamborghinis, Ferraris, etc. While sportscars aren't the last word in cabin spaciousness it does show that wide looks better than tall. But ultimately its about proportions and that's where it works better to have the car look broader than it is tall. A good example is the Honda Odyssey. That's a car did well to hide its 7 seater girth by making itself wider and lower.

I doubt find parking a hassle with it. One of my relatives owned it. That would mean whether building a taller car is for practical reasons or for the sake of building it taller to give a "false" sense of spaciousness. Elfenstar 3rd Gear December 29, 2008 Share December 29, 2008 (edited) Hence, I wonder whether by building a car taller is an easy way and low cost solution for the manufacturers? Regards, By making it taller, it means the car can be shorter and still have the same amount of interior room. Thats why with the exception of mine, most newer models are both wide and taller as each caters to a different aspect of interior space.
