Help Needed (Kenyir to Camerons)

Folks,

 

planning a March trip to Tasik Kenyir and Camerons. Plan to hit Kenyir first then to Camerons via Gua Musang. Problem is that my GPS is routing me up North and then down to Gua Musang, to me that is a huge detour. From the map i saw that there is a west ward route using T156 then 1744, anyone knows how is that route and the condition of the roads?

In March the weather should be dry.

 

If you have driven to Camerons from the "normal" side (Ipoh / Simpang Pulai) then you will know that when rain is forecast, the weather nearer the hilltop becomes very unpredictable (wet and dry and wet and dry all in one drive).

 

You will also know that the quality of the Simpang Pulai road is quite good. In contrast to that, the Camerons - Gua Musang road seems to be built by another contractor (ie the road construction and design is pretty farked up by comparison, but still way better than the old road from the Ipoh side). Expect off camber turns regularly and rough tarmac.

 

Beware of mud slicks flowing from the higher side of the road to the lower side. When the road is misty or wet it is dangerous and can catch you unawares. Combine this with an off camber turn for more excitement.

 

Other than the general not-so-good quality of the road, the drive is quite scenic but worth doing once only. Can be done in about 80 minutes without scaring yourself. 45 minutes if you think you are WRC standard.

drove the Camerons to Gua Musang route once and found it ok but then it was bone dry. Will pay more attention when the weather turn wet. Any idea on the route from Gua Musang to Lake Kenyir?

If u want to travel tat route,due practice caution. Landslide,potholes and sharp turn prone area.

I understand a new highway linking Ipoh to Kuala Terenggnu has been planned but not sure when it will open. Had planned for a Cameron-Redang routine but the report put a dampener on my earlier plan... too long and time consuming. If you uncover a new route, please share.

Always wanted to try Lake Kenyir, particularly the lodging on boat. Are you doing that? I just wonder where to park the car when spending a night in the boat.

Nope staying at the Lake Kenyir Resort and Spa. Also had a very good tip from Virtual Tourist. This fellow was recommending a stay at the Kuala Koh elephant sanctuary. They have a boat ride to a canopy walk and can hear and see wild elephants in the morning.

I am using Holux and i thought with the latest Malsingmap, seems not to be the case. I search Malsing with keywords kenyir and did not find this link, thanks a lot again.

Lake Kenyir Resort and Spa was newly renovated maybe a couple of years back, so accommodation is pretty decent. Seemed like they were doing a good job in fumigation, for we weren't harassed by pesky bloodsuckers the last time we were there.

 

Food-wise, most people will just settle for the in-house buffet. Quite a decent spread, and tasty. However, if you crave for zi char, I suggest driving the 30 odd kms out to the nearby Kuala Berang town.

 

Gua Musang, which is route 4, I believe, was in a really sorry state 14 months ago. Multiple long stretches of unpaved roads, giant potholes, roadwork detours.... Man, it was a real torture for me, especially when driving through the night. By now, it's probably done up, but keep an eagle eye for the rim-eating potholes if you're running on low profiles, just in case.

No, I cannot remember the name - but standard fare. But then, there are very few Chinese makan places, and I've only seen 2, one on the opposite side of the road to the other, I believe. Just drive down slowly when you hit town and look out for typical Malaysian Chinese coffeeshop which usually come with a few tables lining the corridor.

SUV ground clearance - that should do the job. I was on stiffer/lowered suspension the last time.....

 

Whole journey should take you upward of 6 hours.
