Jamesc Hypersonic February 26, 2009 Share February 26, 2009 You can also add Saab to that list, judging from asking prices. But if you buy this type of car, either pay close to paper value or be prepared to drive till end of COE. Thanks, thats great advice! I look forward to driving a Conti in a few years time. ↡ Advertisement

Tomcool74 Neutral Newbie February 26, 2009 Author Share February 26, 2009 (edited) Seem that most of the bros prefer Superb due to higher OMV, lower road tax, DGS, turbo & rear passenger leg room. The drawback of Skoda is brand but it really too good to be ignore anymore, the size of Superb is compareable to BMW 5-series, Mercede-Benz E-Class, etc. Thank you for all the constructive contribution. Sony 1st Gear February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 I would like to differ a bit to your points. May i? Look at it subjectively, which is more important for you? Space - both are big enough to play badminton in it. but the ford only let u play single. the superb can play double. just look at the rear legroom Power - neither offers real power Having tried both, I would say the 1.8T with DSG give it a go with other cars in the same class. Transmission - DSG is new and the future, but Ford's 6 speed traditional torque converter auto is a very smooth shifter. comparing a DSG to torque converter, how to determine which is smoother? and one is 7 sp vs 6. then the power lose thru the converter? Engine - Ford is using Mazda's retuned 2.3 ... its a horrible drinker. may return you 6-7km/L ... Skoda's VAG 1.8T + DSG is much much better... probably can get >10km/L Roadtax - 1.8 vs 2.3 ... no brainier Suspension setup - Mondeo's a good balance of good ride and handling (though handling i think Mazda6 is better), Superb is definitely on the soft side. Depends on what you want. OMV/PARF - The numbers tell the whole story Toys - Ford's Titanium has everything.... everything you need, and more. Superb, unless you go for the Elegance trim. It would be fairer to compared titanium to simply superb and trend to the normal superb. Built Quality - perceived quality ... Superb is better. But if you are going to drive for 10 years,... Ford's will be more durable and hard wearing. Ownership experience - after sales (if you are going back to the AD for servicing), Regent's service is actually not bad. Not sure about Harvest (Exklusiv? ) after sales.... but then again, there are many workshops outside that can service VAG cars. Badge - look elsewhere if you are a badge snob. But it is likely that Superb could be a taxi,... but you never see a Ford taxi, do you? ahh.. this one, i totally agree.. but then, we are seeing ford as the saf vehicle. not much better either. and e-class is a taxi as well, so is a lot of others that are equally popular like camry. I guess we need to overlook the taxi thingy. it will hit any cars For my money? ..... i'd put them on the Superb.... because of one thing - DSG + 1.8T (and higher OMV) ... because Ford's weakest link is their poor 2.3L petrol engine (and lower OMV). anyway, just for discussion. cheers

Samshio 2nd Gear February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 seriously, you are not the only one having the same dilemma ...just the brand is not skoda but others, it will be selling like hotcakes.. just like you put lada badge on a camry. no one will touch it without a ten feet pole + protective suite the badge means more to people than just a icon. it also stands for after sales service, reliabiltiy, etc.. of course, it also stands for years and years of hardwired behaviour (even though it may not be true). eg, toyota 10 years ago produce good cars, today also sure to be good. Korean cars 10 years ago lousy, now sure must be lousy.
Quirky_ster Clutched February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 If brand is the issue, you could get "slightly less " thing in the VW Passat... Then no branding issue.. that will also mean spending a little more $$$ for the brand sake... Turbo engine vs NA, 7 gear dry DSG vs 6gear Torque Converter Patented twin boot vs normal boot Superb vs Mondeo. Writing this comparison while listening to the Mondeo Ad on radio.. " Why driving a inferior, lesser technology car ... " Wonder in this comparison which is the lesser car and older technology... Sounds like the ad is shooting themselves.... Choose Skoda - It's "Simply Clever".. :)
Clubace Clutched February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 (edited) Just OT a bit. Can seem to find any 2nd hand superb in the classified ads or carmart. Edited February 27, 2009 by Clubace
Fortress Clutched February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 (edited) I was driving an Skoda Octy and now converted to a MK III Mondeo. The main reason of the change despite the fact that I do like the Superb, is the after-sale. Many things have been said of, and I understand that it is the old management, many thing are not under warranty despite within the 3 year warranty. However, when i have actually engaged the new management and give them a challenge to solve my dead ABS and Speed sensors, they could not or will not solve....cost or whatever. I even asked them to give me a good deal but was quiet since. Anyway with the Mondeo, warranty is almost without questioning, which i have claimed. Miles 4th Gear February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 Re taxi thingy, i disagree.... at least in Singapore. I have never seen a BMW, Audi, SAAB, or Porsche taxi yet. Though, i have sat in a E39 5-er taxi in Switzerland before. Anyway, you are right.... the badge sells. And Skoda lacks it badly. And also the reputation distributor does not help. If Cycle and Carriage (MB, Mits, KIA), Sime Darby (BMW, Ford, LR, Peugeot) or Wearns group (Volvo, Renault, Chevy) were to sell Skoda, i would not hesitate at all... I would like to differ a bit to your points. May i? anyway, just for discussion. cheers
Fortress Clutched February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 (edited) You are absolutely right....you cannot imagine my frustrations with Skoda. Limkopi Neutral Newbie February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 Between the 2 cars you have shortlisted, I would go for the Mondeo. To me after sales service is very important and Skoda has to earn that before I will part with my money. If you willing to consider the Passat 1.8T, which is on regular auto now with respectable spec, that will give you the space, some brand and reasonably capable service center. If VW is not a consideration, I'd just take the Mondeo.
Quirky_ster Clutched February 27, 2009 Share February 27, 2009 This is a good discussions. Hopefully the AD for Superb reads this thread and have serious thought about rebuilding the brands! Customer satisfaction be it the old and new is important.. Dont just woo the client, the customer are more or equally important! All it takes to thrash the thousands of $$$$ spend on marketing/advert/sponsor/reviews and sales talk is just ONE trickle of mistake and overlook on these matter, once highlighted in a single simple message by real customer and real driver. Harvest should spend more money on customer satisfaction coz the it's far more effective than those marketing talk and advert. To prove this theory, for the record, I've driven Opel for 10 years now and managed to give positive words to family members and friends about Opel. They bought it based on real customer and owner real words and weigh in the good and bad. Not through the sales talk... End up now I got 10 of them driving Opel today and one more this weekend. As for Skoda, you got to prove your worth as great customer service to at least get my kind words to be put to others.. already 5 customer have slipped off your hands in the last 2 months through my "No comment" when it comes to after sales service for Skoda at this time... :), My comments have been car centric only so far... Having said that, the Opel Insignia ( Car of the Year 2008 ) will be a great contender once it landed here. Till then, please work hard and work on your customer service. Still, car wise, Skoda Superb is way better!
