MADAM Amutha Valli Krishnan, 53, the woman who lost her suit in the 'exorcism case', has to pay costs of more than $372,000 for taking on the Novena Church.

She had unsuccessfully sued the church, two priests and six church goers for psychiatric ailments resulting from what she claimed was an exorcism ritual.

She may have to pay a further $92,600 in disbursements if the Supreme Court registrar orders her to.

After meeting her lawyer, Mr R.S. Bajwa, as well as the lawyers for the defendants in chambers on Monday, Justice Lee Seiu Kin ordered Madam Valli to pay the six church goers $300,000 in costs and disbursements, which include court filing fees and other paperwork.

She also has to pay $67,700 for disbursements to the church and Father Simon Tan, and another $5,000 for disbursements to Father Jacob Ong.

Other disbursements, amounting to $34,600 for the church and Father Simon, and $58,000 for Father Jacob, comprising largely of costs in getting psychiatrists to testify for the defence, were referred to the Supreme Court registrar to decide if the amount is fair and should be paid by Madam Valli.

Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim, who acted for Father Simon and Mr Tito Issac for the church and Father Jacob had not asked for their fees to be included in the costs.

This could probably amount to $1 million for the 32-day trial for the two teams of lawyers. 'If the lawyer does not charge his client fees, then he is not entitled to the costs' said Mr Bajwa.

So does it mean that a person who committed a murder, before sentencing to death can be redeemed by repenting...then...whats the purpose of letting him 'feel' the pain to fully understand whats going behind the scene?

The sinner sld be made to understand there is a consequence for every action and that only when u face the consequence sld u be able to repent...

I think a person who committed a crime sld go through a punishment before he can redeem himself.

Even God is not all forgiving if u read the bible...I remembered God cursed and dammed as mentioned in bible too. ;p

Wah......... u sound like a "tit-for-tat" kinda person...

The murderer may not escaped his sentence on earth, but if he truly repents, as in sincere abt it, then y can't he be redeemed? But for those who keep thinking that they can continue doing evil and just repent just before their death, then it's another story liao.

I agree with u that for every action, there will be a consequence. As to when the consequence will be, only time can tell. There are plans for everyone.

After reading this, there is justice finally. Imagine all the stress placed on all parties involved. If there is an intend to con, then one should face up to the consequences. Same goes for life and death.

There's something inherently wrong with this woman. To date, she is still puting up a defiant front in spite of her legal losses.

All these money she has to pay, can be earned back again. But if she fails or chooses to ignore the lesson to be learnt from all this fiasco, I think God himself might teach her His lesson - and that can be VERY irreversible...

Human punishment can last quite a while, but is still regarded temporary. If God decides to "wake" someone up, the effect/s is often very drastic and everlasting.

Novena 'Exorcism' Case

I will not declare bankruptcy

Woman who sued and lost case against church faces huge legal bills

By Arul John

March 18, 2009

THE woman who sued and lost her case against the Novena Church remains upbeat - even in the face of a legal bills of about $372,600.

She will not be made a bankrupt, she declared yesterday, hours after Justice Lee Seiu Kin awarded the defendants' lawyers costs and disbursements.

The registrar of the Supreme Court will also determine if Madam Amutha Valli Krishnan, 53, should pay a further $92,600 to lawyers Tito Isaac and Jimmy Yim.

Mr Isaac, 38, represented the church and one priest, Father Simon Tan, and Mr Yim, 50, represented another priest, Father Jacob Ong.

Mr Yim said the amount included fees for hiring a psychiatrist to evaluate Madam Amutha Valli's medical reports.

Mr Isaac said the amount included fees for hiring a private investigator who revealed discrepancies between Madam Amutha Valli's testimony and her actual activities.

Dismissed case

In August 2006, Madam Amutha Valli sued the church, two priests and six churchgoers, alleging that they forced an exorcism on her.

On 13 Feb, after a hearing that lasted 32days in the High Court, Justice Lee dismissed her case.

Madam Amutha Valli claimed that on 10Aug 2004, after she fainted at Novena Church, Father Tan and Father Ong took her to a room where, for 2½ hours, she was harassed, restrained, assaulted and strangled.

She claimed the incident traumatised her, leaving her unable to work and needing psychiatric help.

Madam Amutha Valli's lawyer, Mr R S Bajwa, 58, said he did not know how she would be able to pay all the bills.

Madam Amutha Valli said she would not appeal. Instead, she would concentrate on finding the money to pay the costs.

Indeed, she told The New Paper yesterday that she was relieved the amount was far lower than what she expected.

She said she was awaiting an official letter from the court about the amount to be paid before taking further action.

Not scared by amount

Madam Amutha Valli declined to elaborate on how she would pay the money but said the amount did not frighten her.

She said: 'My husband, children and my sworn brother (Mr Resham Singh) have said they are proud of me despite my losing the case, and they said they will contribute 'a good sum of money' to help in paying the amount.'

She said she was not working now and might have to look for a job.

For now, she said her poor health made it hard for her to find a job.

When asked if she would sell her apartment in Melbourne, which she bought in 2005, she declined to comment, except to say that the lawyers could 'do what they could' to get the flat if they wanted.

But she firmly said she would not declare bankruptcy or give up her flat in Ang Mo Kio.

She said: 'Bankruptcy is not written on my head.'

She owes legal fees of more than $370,000

TITO ISAAC

MORE THAN $67,600: Mr Tito Isaac represented the Novena Church and one of the priests, Father Simon Tan. This amount comprises filing, recording, and transportation fees.

A FURTHER $34,620?: The registrar of the Supreme Court will assess if MadamAmutha Valli should pay him a further $34,620, which comprises the fees for the private investigator he hired.

JIMMY YIM

ABOUT $5,000: Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim represented a priest, Father Jacob Ong.

A FURTHER $58,000?: The registrar will also assess if MadamAmutha Valli should pay him a further $58,000, which includes the fees of the psychiatrist he hired to evaluate her condition and medical reports.

DENIS TAN

$150,000: Mr Denis Tan represented three of the churchgoers. This amount comprised his fees and expenses incurred in the suit. He said the amount he and lawyer Anthony Lee were awarded was about half the amount they earlier claimed. But Mr Tan said they settled for the smaller amount as they did not want to waste time and money filing documents for a higher sum.

ANTHONY LEE

$150,000: Mr Anthony Lee represented three other churchgoers. This comprised his fees and expenses incurred in the suit.

She's confident that she will not declare bankrupt? Maybe they are already hatching another scheme to swindle people of money to repay the legal fees, and this time she is confident that she and her team will succeed.

People like them are snakes, very cunning and evil. Normally I can find reasons to feel sorry for even the most wretched of criminals. But for her I felt zero sympathy. She gets what she just deserves.

[sweatdrop] I think snakes are very misunderstood creatures....used to symbolise evil and all, but yah she's cunning and trying to make it look like she's the victim and all...if she were really out for justice, she wouldn't be claiming large sums of money.....

if this is going to drive the woman bankrupt, I feel the church should have come forward and totally waive off all their cost and fees if any.

Afterall, the church and the priest should forgive and forget and help those in trouble.

god do not forgive if u do not confess (correct me if i am wrong)

that is why we have hell.
