U can try buying the alternator from Song Yi or any other authorised Chevy stockist or get a re-con alternator as a new 1 is quite ex.

 

I ever had my previous Corona alternator changed at Markcool by Ah Huat. He got a 2nd hand 1 & it lasted several years without any problems. Cost me abt <$200 with labour.

 

Many ws can change a 2nd hand alternator but some r of really poor quality. Wil not last long.

 

The only things that wear out is the bearing & carbon brushes. A 2nd hand 1 they wil change these parts only. Also got a circuit board to control the charging.

 

A good shop wil check all these & change if necessary.

Actually don't change alternator until it dies. Mine just died recently. After 5yrs 2mths service.

 

When alternators die, it usually dies when it is raining. This is no joke.

 

The water usually sends it shorting and then it dies. Tell-tale sign is you car started normally and then all of a sudden while driving, the HU dies with no light and stops playing music. Then the lights in the cabin dim. The gauges go up only when you rev the car and wipers actually slow. The car is running solely on battery juice.

 

Best is to find a place to park the car. Stop it and then call for tow truck.

 

When changing the alternator, as the mechanic to change the charging cable as well. It too will get frayed.

Didn't change car lah. This car all the parts slowly change to new ones and now got new car with old shell!

It's how you torture your car. Mine has already clocked 175k. Can you recall if the 8yo car clocked this kind of mileage? If yes, it gook 8yrs. Mine took 5.

My Corona CD clocked 390K km in 19 years. Pretty close.

Most of the alternators are working overtime due to under capacity and the desire of most car owners to install heavy output ICE, switch on the air con with very low temp and running all kinds of accessories . Coupled with city driving the alternators are just unable to do a proper job with most of the time the batteries are only not more than 80% fully charged.

Under such enviroment, most of the alternators are functioning at about 80% of its max capacity which overtime will cause premature failure due to continuous high output and high heat generated. The first component to start malfuctioning is the rectifiers and that will results in incomplete rectifications of AC generated to DC current. With Some AC cvurrent going into the batteries, it will overtime suffer internal short circuit.

Alternators designed for use in petrol powered vehicle should be able to take the high speed in fact much higher as the pulley is almost three times smaller than the engine main pulley

NO worries. They are built that way since their Internal

design includes a Rectification circuit with Voltage/Current

cut of abilities. Wear and tear of alternator is common

but dont mislead it with prolonged running at high speed.

Sorry to dig up ancient post. My Aveo alternator died on me after 5 years and 10 months. As what Genie mentioned, I remembered the symptoms started showing up immediately on that day that it was raining. The day before was raining too so I guess it must have shorted out. Thankfully my gauges did alert me. From 12v, went down to 11v in a day. The next day went down to 10v. Quickly drove to workshop and upon reaching there, meter read 9v. Mech did a test on the battery, only 100cca left! Horn was out, power window went up/down like a snail. Paid $365 (after 5% discount) for new alternator. Price excluded labor ($40). Spent $20 to recharge my 2 month old dead battery to max.

i'm glad that after 5yrs and 4months my alternator is still kicking.

 

however, after those years it had sustained paint scratches and now thinking of giving it some facelift. it's original black but thinking of switching to white. i saw one similar aveo ss 1.4 white that was elegantly spiced up. wonder where to go to get similar sprucing. any suggestions? any compliance required by authority before can change color (from black to white?)
