Have a close look at the starter's pinion gear which is mounted one end of the starter armature shaft which has helix grooves. it's design in such a way that that when the pinion is the driver( the engine flywheel is being driven), the pinion will remains at the extended position and the starter will exert the torque needed to turn the flywheel.

Once the flywheel accelerates ( when the engine fires up) the flywheel becomes the driver and the pinion is being driven and this action causes the pinion to withdraw its engagement with the flywheel . This action also cuts out the starter solenoid from close to open (no more battery power supply)

What he meant (I think) is that you can still crank your car even when the engine is running (aka you can damage the starter pinion).

Think most cars don't have crank termination feature.

Unless you know how to modify the starting circuit, add a relay in to drop off the starter permanently once engine running.

chk the service manual there is a thing call overrunning clutch in the startor only.

so only remove the startor then can check is there an overrunning clutch inside and chk any damage.

no electrical interlock circuit to stop startor fr turn on again.

may be there is ONE interlock only when the gear is sw to P or N then u can start the startor.

so far not try start the car where gear sw to D or R. better dun do tat the car may move when engine start runing.
