Why bother with all these artificially created social issues. Just do away with NS and poof, all poblems solved.

Singapore is indefensible anyway and will lose even when we win a war.

Some people are just asking to be given special treatment. Especially if its claimed to be of a religious nature, theres often really no point in trying to discuss. SAF must stick to the law.. otherwise, th eimplication is... some soldiers must fight and die... others just need to pray can already ah?

This is funny... just need to "pray" can already ah... Haaaaaa...

LTA(NS) tay ping hui went for reservist with slightly tinted hair ... guess he was in the middle of some serial ? The employer can put in requests for the staff if its work related.

The SAF, being a conscript army has to take in every mother's son. There is no entry requirement to speak of, except for having a Y Chromosone and a Pink IC. While this take all approach solves any manpower issue, it has the drawback of taking in people with special needs or who would never have enlisted if given a choice.

Special needs can range from people who only eat vegetables or halal food to concientious objectors, to people who must keep a ponytail and only eat holy food. All the examples mentioned are special needs, the only thing is the first 3 are common / accepted while the last isn't.

The common and accepted special needs cases are accomodated by the army because it is logistically possible to do so and politically impossible to ignore. Those with a more niched requirement will have to suck thumb since there is nothing specifically catered to them.

In the civillian sector, this is not a problem. If an interviewee gives me a lot of requests I cannot accept, I just ask him to seek employment elsewhere. However, in the unnatural situation where employee and employer are forced onto each other, how much should the employee adapt for the greater good and how much should the employer make exceptions in recognition of an individual's sacrifice?

To me, having an uncommon special interest doesn't make it any less valid. What is uncommon in this part of the world may be common elsewhere. Singapore is taking in more and more people who are not native born. All these uncommon special needs cases will just get more common in future.

So I hope Col. Darius can think of a more sensible answer next time instead of just hiding behind the rulebook. If we want to talk tradition, should the armoured divisions revert to riding horses?
