Which are the "OVERPRICED" cars in spore?

Good comparison.

A fresh grad engineer in M'sia earns RM2.5K, an altis there sells for RM105K (loan interests range from 4-5%).

A fresh engineering grad here earns about 2.8K, an altis here sells for SGD60K (loan interest at 3% +/-).

Technically, its alot easier to own an altis here than in Msia even though RM105K is cheaper than SGD60K.

Totally agree with you, not just cars, imported goods like LV, Prada, Montblanc are beyond the means of many white collars workers.

Assuming agent markup price, overpriced cars can be found in the below link

http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publish/onem...Cost_Update.pdf

Opinions are useless without supporting evidence.

You can always tell how much margin the dealers make from the LTA published data and decide if you are willing to pay the price. See my blog post Fair Margin for Dealers?.

There are business overheads and risks for dealership and those costs are not transparent to buyers. With the imminent reduction in COE quota, the weaker dealers may go out of business so do cautious before paying the booking fees.

From your link below thir basis cost is:

1) Mazda 3 = $57624

2) Perodua Myvi = $ 31667 (1.3L AT)

3) Civic = $68665 (1.6 Auto)

Anything higher then the above is what the AD earned.

Altis cost price is $51768 only. but what they charge is similar as Mazda 3 in the newspaper. Seem like they are more overprice than Civic but no ppls ever mentioned that

I agree, that is useful reference when deciding on which new car to purchase. Unfortunately, think many people do not use it and when they or their friends lose $ when selling their car 2 - 3 years later, just generalise and blame the particular car make. in the first place, buy car in SG is lose money proposition, just a matter of how much.

i think there are 2 different ways to look at this thread. firstly, when you say overprice? are you looking at how much an AD earns or overpriced because of the goverment's tax? i agree with some bros here when they say ADs are earning a reasonable profit. the reason y the prices seems so overpriced is largely due to the tax imposed on cars when they come in.

jus my 2cents.

Car in Sg is affordable to those who deem fit to own one.

If those who hardly can feed themselves and their family, they shouldn't be thinking to own a car right? How about petrol, parking, rd tax, ins...

No truer words has been said.

A substantial part of the taxes pay for the road traffic infrastructure. I don't think we want to have cheap cars but having stucked in jams all day. The COE allocation algorithm needs to be tweaked since now fewer cars are being scrapped and quota premium surging above $20K soon. Most motorists will keep their rides for a longer time and the vicious cycle persists. Can the LTA scholars solve this problem?

Overpriced? So what? There are no lack of car buyers every month. If you cannot afford to pay in cash you can always take a big loan to pay it off. No problem. [:p] Most car buyers do that.

Ya...me me me. I do that.

i take full big big 100% loan with a 2nd hand Sonata. But @ 44k nia.

I still pay less compare to a brand new Honda Civic 1.6ltrs with 30k downpayment. hehehe. [laugh]

Somemore my sonata is 2.4ltr. Good comfy ride. [sunny]

The solution will always revolve around $$$.

I think the whole concept of cars being overpriced is rather nonsensical. Of course cars are not cheap in S'pore. You either can and are willing to afford one, or you are neither. If you can and are willing to afford one, you just have to do your homework to find one that suits your taste and budget. If you dream car is out of your affordability, then move downwards the price range and you are bound to find one that match your budget, with maybe a bit of compromises here and there.

If you can't and are not willing to afford one, then don't get a car. It's not as if somebody point a gun at your head and force you to buy a car. After all our public transport system is world class, and there aren't too many places that's not accessible by public transport. Having one's own private transport isn't that a big deal anyway.

There's no point in lamenting the price of cars, or for that matter a particular brand or model is too overpriced. The market will decide whether the price is right based on the basic ecnonomic principle of demand and supply, bitching about the price won't change that.

I AGREE FULLY.

Cars are cheap in Melbourne.

Cars are cheap in Beijing

Cars are cheap in Manila, Jakarta, KL, Bangkok .... and the parking.

But the traffic jams - ugh ......

I have friends who own cars in HK, do 2,000 km a year, pay S$600 a year in parking (5 min walk from home), and hardly use the car because of the terrible traffic and the super expensive parking, IF you can get a lot.... How about S$8 per hour .... Is the overall cost per km less in HK??

Singapore has limited space, like HK.

THINK and RATIONALISE, use brains, not hormones, all you who think cars are expensive in Singapore.

other country cars are that country's business. friends in HK are also not our business.

we are talking about the local context.

If the car is put into full use, then it will be worth spending.

Considering the parking and other overall cost, the time save on traffic is most important.

And if you enjoy every moment of driving, money spend is better than keeping in the bank.

Not everyone enjoy driving, overprice is everywhere and not only car.
