I got one newly join colleague doing admin task, graduate with a master degree in law from NUS. Then came to realise she is from China(shanghai) where her dad is a high ranking judge in shanghai.

I read thr her thesis accidentally and her performance and command of English is so-so nothing impressive.

Neutral Newbie

Both institutions can provide you with a million and one opportunities, but if you fail to utilize them, you can 'sail' through both without building any character, stamina, or mental capacity to prepare for uni life or real life for that matter.

I don't mean to offend, but I believe that overseas graduates also have an edge over local ones. I'm careful not to generalise. But somehow local grads aren't able to handle quick changes and are very risk averse. They're good at following guidelines and instructions, but taking initiative is an issue.

Do you guys agree?

my teacher once told me that in poly teachers spoon feed the students but in uni..u are alone.

Not true, poly Lecturer always mumurs to themselves. i passed my poly by self study. but if you want to join local Uni, please go to JC. Local Uni allocate 50% of their total places to Local of which only 50 for poly. The rest of the 50% to FT.

I was from the Poly -> NUS route for Comp Sci.

My group of poly frds from SP, NP and TP have no problems with the course... We basically breeze through it (with some hardwork ofcos). I feel that my experience and knowledge gained in Poly helped me in my working life more than what NUS taught me.

Agree with the bros here... Poly grads have advantage over JC grads in technical subjects. Because poly grads are very hands on in their training in poly. While JC grads have advantage over Poly grads in academic subjects that requires some "story-telling" [nod]

You'll be better equipped for the real world (applicable to technical and engineering fields) if you go by the Poly->Uni route. Cause you would have had a very technical hands-on experience in Poly + a very academic training in Uni [scholar]

Yes. You are right! I really having problem adapting to the academic approach by the university. All the grammer and argumentative essay that need to be done. Totally different from poly. From what I see, JC people are coping well on those stuff. Anyway, I am from Multimedia & Infocomm in NYP, I choose to do BSc(Information Systems Management) in SMU over Computer Science in NTU because I have a strong interest in business, which I dun get a chance to do it during my poly days due to my lousy O level results.

But after 7 weeks in SMU, i sort of regret. for I see my friends in NTU dun have similar problem with mine. They are all coping well because most things they learn are technical stuff. Not those management stuff in SMU, all talk, brainstorm, think, concept and thoughts... I simply sucks at doing such things..

bro, my command of english wasn't good either but still managed to scrap through, so dun give up ya

just read more articles and journals to brush up the "ang mo" lors, should help

not exactly..depends on your course(both poly and uni), you can get up to 1 year worth of module exemption..

my JC mates in uni go thru a 4 yr course while my course is only 3 yrs..we both grad with BEng (Hons)

JC very boring but definitely easier to get into uni than poly. Poly got many hot chicks, some not very smart like Ris Low but very easy to hong (esp if you drive Suzuki Swift Sports, heheh).

By going overseas for studies is already an education by itself. Living with other students from the world over opens up the mind and the interaction is different. Opportunites for street-smarts is more in doing things on your own - no parents etc to guide / pamper you, although it can be acquired locally (NS helps). So I do agree and as most forummers say, it just provides you a foundation to reap the benefits whichever way you choose.
