  4. I agree, i prembaree tree oni....... [laugh] University degree 'not vital for success': Khaw Boon Wan Getting good jobs after leaving school more important: Khaw Published on May 05, 2013 8:44 AM By Toh Yong Chuan Singaporeans do not need to be university graduates to be successful, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan yesterday. What is more important is that they get good jobs after leaving school, Mr Khaw told some 160 students and young adults in an Our Singapore Conversation dialogue. "If they cannot find jobs, what is the point? You own a degree, but so what? That you can't eat it. If that cannot give you a good life, a good job, it is meaningless," he added. Mr Khaw was responding to a participant who said the Government should set aside more university places for Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and polytechnic graduates.

  8. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...dating-20130305 FACEBOOK "confession" pages, which allow users to share secrets anonymously, may have helped lovelorn students express their romantic intentions to their objects of affection, but the majority of undergraduates do not want to date, a survey has found. Some 400 undergraduates aged between 19 and 25 from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University and SIM University were asked what was most important to them. And romance was not anywhere on top of their minds. The survey found that six in 10 respondents are not in a relationship. Of these, seven in 10 have no plans to actively pursue one. BACKGROUND STORY WHAT'S IMPORTANT? Respondents were asked to rank these options in order of priority* 1 Getting good grades 2 Earning money 3 Finding a job 4 Socialising 5 Keeping fit 6 Finding a life partner * Respondents also ranked "Others", which came in seventh. KEY FINDINGS 60% are single. Of these, seven in 10 do not plan to actively pursue a relationship 35% would start looking for a partner only after establishing their career, and 38 per cent could not decide. Only one in four would not wait to build a relationship 90% agree that a relationship provides emotional support, and 70 per cent said being in one is a good thing

  11. Hi bro, I just curious about what are the usual path people take to go to local university (NUS,NTU and SMU). Currently, I am a year 1 student @ SMU and I am basically struggling with everything. Prior to that, I was from NYP and I did quite well with an overall GPA of 3.5. Most of my peers from polytechnic are also struggling to make a mark for ourselves in SMU. I did not know about other universities that why I am trying to find some opinions from you guys here. I came from a neighbourhood pri and sec school, My O level results aren't that fantastic. 23 pointer... English only C6. But my Hokkien sure A1. hahaha... Does 2 years in JC helps you adopting life in University better or 3 years in polytechnic? What is your choice? Anyway, my personal view, I think that JC students have strong command in english languages, be it verbally or written. They are very good at expressing themselves and are very vocal when it comes to class participation in SMU. Polytechnic students like us does not have such a strong command in english. When I submit my individual projects, my prof actually pin point all my grammers! It damn saddening to say that us polytechnic students has such lousy english standard or is it just me? The only advantages we have is prior experience to technology stuff which means that we are more tech-savvy, that's all. And I really admired those JC student who can speak professional english. How I wish I could be like them. Oh yah, not forgetting our foreign students. SMU has a lot of foreign students from Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and China. Some of the more weird one are people from South Africa, South Korea and Japan studying here full time. I really have to say that other than their command of english, they are way smarter than all of us Singaporeans. Many came here thru scholarship and we singaporean have to take loan from CPF or Bank to study. How sad can it be isn't it? Hope to see more response to this tread!
