  1. Now our gahmen is expanding the coverage to "distracted walking", although is only advisory for the time being. "The updated Highway Code, which took effect on Dec 1, comes after two Land Transport Authority (LTA) initiatives that encourage pedestrians to pay attention on the road." 'Distracted walking': Should it be made illegal? https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/distracted-walking-should-it-be-made-illegal-12131390
  2. after US ...now Malaysia … The leaders of Thailand and Malaysia agreed on Friday to boost security cooperation and consider building a border wall to combat transnational crime and smuggling, an idea that appears to be gaining popularity elsewhere in the world. People-trafficking and the smuggling of contraband, including drugs and petrol, have flourished along the Thai-Malay border for years until a crackdown by Thai officials on human traffickers caused some of the routes to shut down last year. Analysts say separatist insurgents operating in Thailand’s deep south use Malaysia as a base to launch and plan their attacks. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters that security remained “a very important matter” for both countries and there was an agreement to step up intelligence gathering and sharing to rein in cross-border terrorism. “We both face security issues including the fight against terrorism, human trafficking and illegal smuggling, that is why we need to address these issues seriously,” said Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Najib said both sides had discussed the construction and extension of a border wall but details remained to be worked out.

  5. Former Botak Jones owner returned as Big Bern's American Grill... Ha..ha.... saving the distant of driving all the way to Sembawang,The Handlebar" but still cannot compare with the surrounding environment of The Handlebar. Yahoo news: Big Bern’s: Starting over again…at 63 At the height of their business, with up to 13 outlets, they were living their dream. Their tills were ringing in decent 6 figures sales each month and life was exciting and fun. Their customers could not get enough of their hard core no-frills American chow. They went from Bernie’s to Botak Jones and consulted for a few outlets with similar concepts…there was no stopping them. Then, it all fell apart, “it was a series of bad business decisions and partnership woes” and I could see the pain in the business hardened eyes of Bernie Utchenik as he said so. When Bernie and his wife Zee moved on from their last Botak Jones outlet (they sold it) in Balestier, they were still staring at a “staggering” 6 figure debt, the same they used to make monthly back then. Now at age 63, when he should be reaping the rewards and enjoying the soft sunset years ahead, they are starting all over again. “No choice. We got some good years left ahead and we got debts to clear”. But have willpower and skills, will travel, I say. They now roost here in Toa Payoh (Bernie has this thing for quaint and industrial spots) and their comforting and lovable American menu is up again. Plus, Bernie and Zee are up at it personally at the stall each day. He suffers from personal anxiety disorders but calms it with his fighting spirit and some medication. Despite all that, he spends at least 3 hours a day in the kitchen. Slowly and surely, the debt is clearing and nothing is stopping them. He spoke nothing of his woes and gushed only about his kitchen craft. I had to dig and scratch it out of him. I am not a fan of salmon- too bland and blah for me. But I note how well chefs do this. They took a wild caught salmon (the texture and flavour is bolder) and seared it very well and was not the usual dry piece of fish I usually get at dressed down western eateries like this. Their own made tartar sauce was a bonus to the show. The lovely potato cake completed the show. The Po-Boys sandwich did not floor me the first time I tried it. The bread used felt like a stack of cardboard but they recently changed it to what felt a whole lot more authentic- it was softer and gummier inside and crunchy but not crispy. The battered soft shell crabs lumps had its natural flavour but would’ve preferred it with more marinate. The greens and the chiili sauce lifted it. Bernie is very practical… “sell good food, treat the customers well and git myself back on my feet”. He will get there and be up for air very soon, I know. 6. hi to MCF bros and sis! Should i change my current 5.5 years old 2.4NA l4 sonata to a twin charge jetta 1.4tsi sports? I need advice as i am confuse between the two as they are very close together in terms of spacious, comfort and maybe engine performance. Anyway my question is 1. is the 1.4tsi far more powerful than my 2.4na ? if i happen to go genting , which of both engine is a better choice to climb up the steep slopes? 2. I know the 1.4tsi is good for traffic lights and the 2.4 is good for highway cruising! but my driving pattern is in sg is 50% highway and 50% urban and i am confuse should i stay on my sonata or change my car to the jetta?
  7. 4 out of 5?? i think base on the selected group in the survey, they shouldn't conclude such as misleading information. Nevertheless, would you consider sending your kids overseas if you have the mean?

  10. Assume you are hunting next car, budget only enough for Jap/Kor mid-range categroy, Look at Honda in Singapore market, will you choice? Accord, Civic, CRV all MIT, but price ridiculous high, CTR, City, Jazz, Stream disappeared from market, Civic only 1.6L AT available, no MT, no 1.8 & 2.0 version, only 2 airbags, no traction control All model engines without TC, DGI etc new tech, still stick on outdated Vtec obviously Honda technology is far behind its compitetor like Toyota, Hyundai, Kia etc, but price still is premium, if Honda still runs its business in this strategery, soon or late previous glorious honda will be same as Mitsubishi and Suzuki in Singapore.
  11. Joke, if cant afford then don't bid, let Singapore host the major event VIETNAM PM COULD PULL PLUG ASIAN GAMES http://www.thanhniennews.com/sports/vietnam-pm-could-pull-plug-on-asian-games-25086.html Vietnam built a number of stadiums and sporting venues for the 2003 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games that have rarely, if ever, been used since. Hanois 1,000th Birthday celebration in 2010 prompted another massive bout of wasteful spending as a number of streets, bridges and other infrastructure built for the event collapsed or quickly deteriorated due to rushed and sloppy construction. In a country that has been notorious for squandering taxpayers money on hosting extravagant and unnecessary events, the public has been less than jubilant since Hanoi was picked to host the 2019 Asian Games (Asiad) two years ago. Facing strict criticism over the high (and seemingly escalating) cost of hosting the sporting event amid economic difficulties and a lack of sports infrastructure, Vietnam is considering withdrawing from the regions largest sporting event, which would have made it the first Southeast Asian nation for 20 years to host the showpiece competition. At a regular meeting of the central government on April 1, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung instructed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to submit a detailed plan on hosting the quadrennial 2019 Asiad. Dung said so far the ministry only reported to the National Assembly, Vietnams legislature, about hosting the event. "I havent heard anything and I am not clear on anything, he said at the meeting. Dung said relevant agencies have to handle the issue thoughtfully. We agreed to host Asiad but it should only be carried out, with approval from the Prime Minister, when there is a feasible plan. Otherwise, [Vietnam] wont host [the event], he said. Dung instructed his deputy Vu Duc Dam and Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh to report to him about the issue this week. The ball will then be in Dungs court to decide whether Vietnam will host the event. Earlier, at a meeting to discuss the issue last Saturday, Deputy PM Dam had told relevant agencies to consider withdrawing from hosting the event. Despite several ministry representatives saying it would be very difficult for Vietnam to do so, Dam instructed relevant agencies to touch base with the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) and involved partners on a withdrawal plan. People who say Vietnam will have to pay fine of $1 million to the Olympic Committee of Asia is incorrect. There has never been any case of paying fines under such circumstances in the past, he said. However, he said it would be difficult for other Asian countries to host the event if Vietnam withdraws from hosting the 2019 Asiad. Currently, no other Asian countries are eager to host Asiad for Vietnam. Indonesia competed for hosting the event and lost but currently, they are not prepared to host Asiad. Turkmenistan used to be interested in the event but they just won the race to host the 2017 Asian Indoor Games and will be unable to host another continental sporting event in such a short time. Vietweek asked OCA about what would be in the offing should Vietnam pull the plug, but had yet to get a reply at the time of going to press. In 2012, Hanoi won the vote over Surabaya of Indonesia in a two-city race. Dubai reportedly pulled out at the last minute saying it wanted to focus on future bids. Earlier, four other potential bidders, including Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi and Hong Kong had withdrawn, mostly for financial reasons. Questionable plan Ever since, critics have said that organizing such a big event would result in an economic burden and that the actual cost of hosting the Asiad would be much higher than the estimated amount. When bidding for the event in 2012, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism estimated the cost would be US$150 million, which was already criticized as too high for Vietnam. But at a meeting last month, Deputy Finance Minister Do Hoang Tuan Anh quoted a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plan as saying that the government will have to prepare around $300 million for the event, almost doubling the initial estimate. The figure did not include VND820 billion ($38.67 million) in estimated expenses for the training of Vietnamese athletes who would take part in the Games, he said. In several documents about hosting the 18th Asiad, the finance ministry showed it was suspicious of the sports ministrys plan, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported. In a document dated January 2013, the finance ministry said the Asiad would be much bigger than South East Asian Games 2003 but the planners only estimated cost as 1.2 times higher. In another document last July, the finance ministry asked how the sports ministry would enlist private investment for 72 percent of the cost as planned. The finance ministry has repeatedly asked the sports ministry to reconsider hosting the event because Vietnams economy is in the doldrums and the state exchequer should prioritize urgent social welfare issues. Last week, Vuong Bich Thang, general director of the Sports Department, said the cost would not exceed $150 million and that was is reasonable to host Asiad with that amount. We think what residents are concerned about the most is whether the money will be wasted or siphoned off during carrying out the plan, he said. Not the right time Bui Quang Vinh, Minister of Planning and Investment, told Tuoi Tre in an interview on March 31 that Vietnam should not host the Asiad. The ministry of planning and investment has said $150 million is not enough to host the Asiad, he said. Former chairman of Vietnam Olympic Committee Ha Quang Du said this is not the right time for Vietnam to host the Asian Games. Relevant authorities should listen to the opinions of the public to see if they should continue with the plan or not, he said. Its not right to say hosting Asiad is to promote the countrys image. During dozens of years of economic reforms, we have done a number of things to promote the country and the world knew about us, he said. He also said that unlike the World Cup, an Asiad would not have significant impact on attracting international tourists. Le Nhu Tien, a senior lawmaker, said he was concerned by high costs for hosting the event the most. He said Qatar spent $2.8 billion for the 2006 Asiad and China spent nearly $20 billion for the event in 2010. South Korea spent $1.62 billion, how could Vietnam host the 18th Asiad with $150 million? he said. Who will be responsible if costs for the event increase several times? Vietnam hosted the South East Asian Games in 2003 and many facilities built for the event have been criticized as wasteful because they have not been used for sporting purposes later. Nguyen Sy Cuong, another lawmaker, said sports minister Hoang Tuan Anh had not responded to his question during a recent meeting about how sports authorities would plan to use the facilities after the major event. There is a reality that [sport authorities] only focused on receiving money without caring about permanent use. Many sport facilities have been used for other purposes, he said. I think Vietnam should withdraw and should think that being fined once [for withdrawing] is still not worse than wasting money on costly sport facilities that can be used only once.
  12. i reported to traffic police, got a call from an investigating officer to say that they won't be investigating cause there are no injuries. I wonder if I have been a motorcyclist or a pedestrian if it would be a different story. They driver also made a false report to say that I hit him. Again the police say it is not an offence to make false claims but i am at liberty to take up a civil suit. I have already made a full claim! The investigating officer told me that they are now looking into catching people who drive against the flow of traffice but not interested in car reversing on 4 lane road. So now it is okay to reverse on main road, make sure you get into an accident that does not injure anyone. In this way you won't be charged for dangerous driving. What do you think?

  15. To you, what is considered as an upgrade of vehicle? I used to think from a price point, so long my next vehicle is more expensive, that means upgrade. Apparently to some, the CC plays a part as well. Examples: Price Point - Last time buy the car 40k. Now gg change to new car which costs 60k. Rgdless of first or second hand. Performance - Last time drive Honda Accord 90k. Now gg change to copen 60k. Presuming copen performance is better la Car Capacity - From an altis change to Jag XJ...suddenly 5000cc...upgrade? Brand - From Accord to vw scirocco...upgrade? Just for discussion...in office zho bo
  16. WTF..if i have money i buy lor....why shd what i work as dictate that i get one? COE: Consider driver's occupation as well THERE is another factor that the authorities should consider in a revamp of the certificate of entitlement (COE) system, and that is the car owner's occupation ("COE: Time for a tune-up?"; Thursday). Many drivers use their cars just to get from home to work. They park their cars for the whole day at their workplaces, then drive home. Such drivers do not really need a car and can get around easily with public transport. The exception is those who work in areas where public transport is not readily available. Then there are those whose occupations require them to be on the road very often, and relying on public transport is neither efficient nor productive. For example, it is not uncommon for people in sales to travel from Pasir Ris to Jurong, then to Sembawang and Tiong Bahru, all in a single day, to meet clients. For them, taking taxis may actually cost more than owning a car, and taking public transport can be very time-consuming. For some others, like those in pastoral care or social services, a car is necessary because they have to travel far, often to provide important services to the people they are looking after. For such people, having a car is a necessity, not a luxury. Making COEs very expensive hurts them - and society at large. I hope the authorities take these factors into consideration if they review the COE system. Alex Yeo

  18. Habitual red light chiongsters, kindly 自动behave unless you wana be another Ma-Chi or best continue to contribute SGD200 each time to state coffers From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1236757/1/.html Traffic Police to consider installing more cameras at problematic junctions Posted: 12 November 2012 2025 hrs SINGAPORE: The Traffic Police (TP) periodically reviews the deployment of red light cameras based on ground assessment, and will consider installing additional cameras at problematic junctions if needed. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister, Teo Chee Hean said the Traffic Police deploys red light cameras at road junctions that are identified to be problematic based on accident data and public feedback. Traffic junctions that do not have red light cameras installed are supported by mobile enforcement operations. Mr Teo said the Traffic Police will also be upgrading its current fleet of cameras to digital technology in the near future to allow for more effective enforcement and deterrence against motorists who beat the red lights. In a written reply to a question in Parliament, Mr Teo said the Traffic Police takes a firm and active enforcement stand against such motorists. In the first nine months of this year, the Traffic Police detected 13,881 red-light violations, an increase of three per cent from the 13,490 violations detected over the same period in 2011. While enforcement and penalties are needed, the Traffic Police will also continue with its efforts to educate motorists about road safety. - CNA/fa

  23. This Mr Ho is proposing to revert back to the undemocratic, anarchic system which we have finally gotten rid of previously. If we gong gong adopt what he proposes, it will be a step forward, three steps back. No brainer what will be our response. [hur] From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_733650.html Consider reverting to appointed presidency Published on Nov 14, 2011 GIVEN the lack of understanding regarding the role of the elected president, it may be timely for the Government to consider reverting to an appointed presidency ('Many confused about job of president: Poll', Nov 2; and the editorial 'Fixing perceptions of the elected president's role', Nov 5). We can craft many rules about what the elected president can or cannot do, but the reality is that politicisation of the post is inevitable if a president is elected by the electorate. Not all the misunderstandings over the role of the elected president are inadvertent. Some probably reflect what sections of the electorate hope the elected president will do for them, even if it is beyond his constitutional authority. Though an elected president can function as a check and balance against an errant government, it need not always work out that way. If the electorate can elect an 'irresponsible' government, there is no assurance it will not elect an equally 'irresponsible' president. If Parliament decides so, Singapore can revert to an appointed president - without executive powers - once President Tony Tan serves out his full elected term. As for checks and balances, let the elected opposition of the day play that role. Ho Swee Huat
