Idling and engine stall problems!

Hi Guys,

 

Like to tap on this thread instead of starting a new one, hope that bro Dezouk wouldn't mind.

I had my alternator changed to a re-conditioned one. So far, I have not experience engine stalling when I'm driving with my headlights on since the change. My mech however, did mentioned that I might experience the an occassional engine stall due to the wiring's age. Has any bros here faced this before?

 

Also, now my RPM is too high...when idling without headlights and A/C, the RPM runs at 1600, I personally think that its too high. I spoke to my mech about it and he said that its ok, he said that infact, most old cars would have RPM running alittle higher. But to run at 1600RPM when idle, I honestly think its really too high...

I believe your idling is very high. Normally, it should be at around 800 to 1k wihtout a/c on. With a/c on, it should be around 1k to 1.1k. Is very fuel consuming if your idling is at 1.6k. Any Seniors can advise?

Exactally dude, agree on the increased FC with RPM running at 1600 when idle. Usual would be 800 - 1000, or at most up to 1200...but mine's running at 1600

 

I wanna try adjusting the RPM on my own but I'm not too sure how, don't wanna end up messing up the whole timing of the engine and current...

 

I'm thinking of visiting Saber for this problem though, going back to Mech, he'll only tell me that its normal ...

btw, that's not called timing. timing is a different thing altogether. this is called idle speed.

Any idea whats the charges like? I've been spending quite over the past 3 weeks on her liao...like to have a feel how much does Saber usually charge for this?

 

If its not too much of a trouble, maybe someone could PM me on the charges? Could be sensitive if posted in public..would really appreciate it if someone could let me know roughly how much it'll cost.

1600rpm is very high for idling speed. In fact, at that idling speed, you get very little engine braking, and at low speeds, dropping the clutch without stepping on the accelerator will cause your car to surge forward. Cars should not be idling at 1600rpm unless they are race tuned with high lift camshafts which don't allow for low end smooth idling.

 

You said your car does not stall anymore. At 1600rpm idling without a/c and headlights, I'm not surprised it doesn't stall. Your a/c and headlights would need to sap at least 1000rpms before reaching stall speed of 400rpms!!!

if it's a simple problem not expensive la... it's a 20 second job actually... unless there are other reasons that your mech needs to raise it to 1600rpm.

Currently , with AC on, my idling is at 1.2 to 1.4k , without AC at 800 - 1k , but again sometimes without AC it will fall to 200 and stall :)

Other than the 2 knobs at the side which controls the fuel (which in turns the idling), is there any other knob which I can adjust the idling?

 

My RPM drop to abt 600 some time back and I have to adjust it back to 800 range. But I think now it is too rich or something. Sometimes when I switch off my engine, it will re-ignite and then die off.

my car is 23 years old. i did change alternators before but never experienced sudden engine stall. my idling is currently 1100RPM with AC, 900 without. hope Saber fixed your issues.
