Do you trust wheel alignment without computers ?

I will probably do more alignment here if they charge cheaper.

But since I go up north al least once a year, I rather do it there.

When the price disparity is so big, very hard to give local shop here a chance.

Malaysia has a proper car industry, so I do not buy the story that they are less skillful,

After all, with the aids of the computer, only basic hand skill is require liao.

i always do my rotation and alignment up north. total around Rm40-RM50 only. and the thing is they do a good job also

Yr assumption of seasoned mechanic being paid s$5/ per hr is hardly available. Even general worker can get more than s$5.00/hr.The company labour charge for skill mech should defintely more than $5.00 to cover all the direct and indirect costs and to make a reason profit. . Ten minute looks like is the actual time to remove filter ( assuming the filter is in a easy to work location ) and draining the oil. You will need time to drive the car to the lift and if it's two post lift you need to adjust the arms so that the car will seat and balance perfectly. The mech cannot be so highly productivity to be fully engage in working 8hrs, he need time to rest due to fatige, to fetch tools, to put the oil collector to position and finally he have to do move the oil collector away, lower the lift and drive the car out of the shop.

It's back breaking to do oil change using a floor jack and stands. What I referring to is a surface mounted elect/hyd lift which may cost ranging from $3,000 to 6.000 per unit ( my figure maybe out of date)

With more than 900 shops in singapore and 550,000 cars you can easily roughly estimate the numbers of cars per shop get for oil changing and not to forget, certain percent of do them in JB and certain percent hardly follow schedule.

It actually depends on the operator/mechanic.

The computer is a tool and if the operator does not use it correctly then it is equally useless. (Garbage in Garbage Out).

thats why i say hard to totally work it out

im calculating based on perfect scenario. that means actual men hrs. not factoring in the fatigue and rest. and also if the mechanic take 10mins to take out your oil filter den he is really unskilled.

the one who service my car and take it out in under 30secs. once the filter is out the oil comes out like a gushing tap. its more or less fully drained in 1min.

also there isnt a need for floor jacks. just jack a little higer to unscrew the nut to drain the oil and maybe to change the oil filter, why is there a need to use stands?

also if lets say there is someone in to change other more costlier stuff like suspensions. the WS charges $100 and takes 1hr to change it. the profit margin for that hr is increase substaintally. so to say, the WS might make lesser for this job but he earns it back thru another.

yah lor...alot of ppl that their $5 machiam bigger than buffalo cart wheel leh.....fastfood chain staff already earn more than that liao, somemore dun need to work under hot sun/rain.....mechanic has to work under sun/rain, dirty and oily environment with no aircon...

to alot of ppl, anything related to car servicing is like chicken feet, instead of typing away in the office with aircon on, perhaps is time for these ppl to get their hands and legs dirty then they will know how hard to earn these money.

True, Garbage in Garbage out.

But if assuming the computer is properly updated, the skill level require will be so much lesser.

The lesser skill mech now will only need to set up and adjust the alignment by looking at the screen.

If using the old method, the mech will need to do and repeat measurement and adjust accordingly. T

his is assumming that he understand what he is measuring, the chances of error is also greater.

i use my brains to work not my hands and legs, so?u have a problem with that? people ask for opinions on how they calculate the cost. i merely input some facts which i happen to know and have learnt before. did i comment $5 is small $$? did i say mechanic's job easy? u wanna come in and flame arh!? go else where la, me aint some small kiddo who tok c0ck.

i dont see a point arguing with a someone who just pops in and flames w/o basis.

i suggest u do ur math. average 1 mechanic earns $1400/27days(inclu sat)/10 hrs= $5.19

and btw... i used the word assuming the mechanic earns $5.

It takes at least two to three years of studying and another three years of practical hand-on work before one can be consider a skill mechanic. To be a Master mechanic you will need more indepth training provide by car manufacuters or attend professional courses ( hardly available in this part of the work). Besides all these you need to keep up to date by subcripting to paid professional magazine and forums.

So for those out here, mechs are not GREASE MONKEY!! They are professional working with their hands and heads.

also u can let the mechanic earn $10/hr, the WS still earns! as i say end of the day the WS makes more for some jobs and make lesser for some jobs.

i think help1 dont get wad im trying to say. he's seeing as thou i look down on ppl who uses their hands and legs to earn a living which clearly im not.

all along i was just breeaking down the cost at an estimate rate at a request of someone. and cost analysis cant be broken down perfectly. u can only do an estimate based on ceteris paribus theory

that i very much agree. a skilled mechanic takes alot years to become and i respect them, i see them as engineers only fixing different things.
