AUDI OR BMW

The consensus after so many debate i think singaporean still Love BMW more than AUDI , but going forward BMW need to work hard as AUDI pose a big tread to BMW as have been notice in europe seen starting of this year. Is good for BMW as than it will increase their performance and reliability for BMW lover.

BMW became world no. 1 for luxury cars over the last several years, coinciding with Merc's dark period when they had all the quality issues.

It's no secret to marketers that to continue growing your business, you need to keep attracting younger customers. That is what BMW focused on, and they were successful. Merc realised that belatedly, but they are now catching up with the new C Class. And that is Lexus' challenge, because their cars are seen as reliable but boring, unfortunately.

Audi has only recently started marketing aggressively. Being the newest entrant, they have done the smart thing by copying BMW's focus on the younger generation. They need to spend a lot more on advertising etc to build brand awareness and desirability, and that is why PA's margins are currently among the highest for luxury cars. However, this is to the detriment of the owners, who suffer poorer resale values because of the low OMVs.

The problem facing any 'young' and 'hip' brand is that, over time, it becomes 'established' and a bit more boring and the new entrant is sexy. MTV used to be hip last time, but is now just another channel on the TV. You also see this with M1, which was hip when it was first launched, but has now lost that label to StarHub. And you are now seeing it with BMW and Audi.

The challenge for BMW, therefore, is how it will fight off the onslaught from Audi and remain attractive to younger customers vis-a-vis the sexy new rival. To some extent, I think that is why BMW has been going on a new model offensive, launching cars in new segments such as the X1, 5 GT etc. They need these cars to compete in segments that Audi is in/will be.

I am all for greater competition among carmakers, as we as consumers ultimately benefit. Bring it on! :D

What I am really amazed by BMW's marketing is that the cars are designed for sporty drive, fast round the corner etc. The steering is heavy compartively!! Yet they are able to attract many female drivers.

Audi and Lexus wise the design are kind of in the middle. But to me they are not exciting enough (again unless it is the quattro turbo some big V engine).

Merc I like the new E class and CLK, but I think I want to leave that until I become my own boss. haha. Their Black series or AMG are just superb.

BMW's marketing is generally acknowledged to be one of the best.

For people who want A to B transport, cars are commodities, just like electrical appliances etc. However, unlike electrical appliances, cars are slightly better in the sense that the differences in ride comfort, handling etc are tangible, i.e. they can be felt.

To rise above commodity status, you need to appeal to a human emotion. The best brands have a simple tagline that sums up what they are all about. Nokia's is Connecting People, about communication rather than selling phones, which are commodities. BMW's tagline in the US is Ultimate Driving Machine, now changed to Sheer Driving Pleasure elsewhere.

This is what BMW's new Joy advertising campaign seeks to achieve as well. It's not about building cars, but giving people joy. See http://www.bmw.com/JOY

The kind of marketing that needs to be shaped up over at Ford's Vantage Auto and the Skoda's Harvest Autos. These are 2 really underrated cars IMHO.

I think the interior deseigners from BMW need a creative inspiration before i can safely buy one. They have boring interiors. Too bad i can't mix and match Audis interior with BMW's driving characteristics.

BMW interior is consistent over the generations. Giving driver the same feeling from model to model.

Yeah, I would sure like a car that:

1. Rides like a Merc

2. Drives/handles like a BMW

3. Grips bends like a quattro and

4. Idles like a Lexus and as reliable too!

Note: For item 3, Merc has 4-Matic and BMW has x-Drive, but for reasons unknown, are not brought in as sedan options here in SG (only for their SUV derivatives). These will be a match for Audi's quattro sedans, if they are also available here.

Actually, the previous E83 BMW X3 (pre-2007 variant), came close to that.

1. It did not have run-flat tyres (unlike the current Si models). So the ride is aplomb and smooth for an SUV.

2. With near-50/50 balance and rear-weighted AWD, and relatively lower c.g. (compared to normal SUVs), it actually drives like a sports car. This one no bluff.

3. x-Drive grips bends as well as quattro, if not better on the wet (quattro is somewhat more tuned for snow driving).

4. The M54 IL6 engine is super smooth on idle, without the current N52's Valvetronic intrusions, which somewhat idles less smoothly now.

So there you have it!

After reading through, the whole thread. I still have my mind fixed on Audi. I don't quite agree that Audi has lower resale value. It has lower OMV, but the apeal factor kept ther reslave value high. You can check the prices in sgcarmart, they are listed at around the same prices as equivalent BMW or Merc.

In terms of ECU mod, Audi is the way to go. Cheap and highly effective, and best of all, still keeps warranty intact.

Actually not. They were not trained, maybe just briefed, they are just volunteers. One of my wife's colleague was one of the drivers.
