suprise to hear from some members comment on the "right lane higher priority" theory. all along, i tot when on merging lane, cars will alternate to merge.... maybe someone can call TP to confirm??

anyway, I always believe that nvr ever get involve in side to side accident, it could drag damn long cause each party will have their part of the story...

Alternating is fine, but occasionally there will be some a--holes who will speed up to close the gap in front, meaning they try to squeeze past the guy beside, who is already ahead.

I travel along that road regularly too as I work around the area, I've few such encounters, but majority of the drivers will give way. :)

Haha, tell me about it! Have seen lorries and vans tailgating the vehicle in front of them in order not to let you pass, even you have already signal your intention long ago!

I think if you guys look at the arrows on the road it looks alternated from right to left. I saw it as i drove by its looks like the right arrow is on top of the left one in a merging lane. So i guess TS was correct in his queue but evidently in a give way situation either one has to give in if not both car will bottle neck.

actually dont need to be so confusing. basic theory say alternate. We dont have to post so long on this leh

Alternate or zipping would ensure smoother merging , and hence smooth traffic flow. If right has the right of way, and everyone insist it, there will be jammed.. It's not called a merging lane for nothing, i.e to merge and not give way.

If you don give way how do you merge??? 1 person trying to merge, the other tailgating not giving enough space. Thats why i said even in a merging lane there will be such thing as giving way.

Have you not encountered another vehicle trying to overtake eventhough you were infront during merging???

Don be surprised a simple marking on the road is not confusing.

In cases like this, an unwritten rule of thumb applies and it goes a little something like this: "Who Dares Wins"

So basically, the car who gets the position is whoever doesn't care about his/her car getting scratched or banged-up, or doesn't care about his/her NCB. When it comes to claiming insurance, it's 50/50. Happened once to a friend of mine, the insurers told him that it doesn't matter which lane you're on, in merging lanes, any collision is 50/50 by default and both parties lose their NCB.

In conclusion, it just isn't worth it to fight over something as trivail as being the first to merge! If the vehicle in mention is very "hiong" and die-die wants to be first, just let him go lah!

Actually i do a google. they never mention which go first. The only exception is if you are merging into another lane, giveway to that lane. Other than that, our slip road merging lane no rules at all. so i guess should be the car infont go first.

Of couse have to give way, but follow the alternate method, i.e. give way to the car ahead of you, even if he is only half body ahead.

Tailgaters and overtakers in merging lane are not practicing alternate method and are causing all the grieves here. To minimise overtakers, I usually takes middle lane asap when I enter the merging lane. But there'll be a couple daredevil overtakes that eat in to the sholder just to get ahead while in merging lane, that I cannot prevent.

I do agree that we have to give way to traffic on the right on some cases. But I thought upon merging lanes, we should give way to whoever is ahead of us? I mean that is according to normal traffic flow, not on purpose of accelerating and hence no giving way. I thought this way is better because both ways, either from left or right, will merge smoothly. If the give way to the right rules apply at merging lanes, I don't think those on the left can ever move off and there will be a hold back of traffic for those on the left side. In such lane merging cases, I think we should apply the giving way attitude (be it from the left or from the right) to make the merging traffic a smooth flowing one for everybody.
