hey i used to shift to L often when i am on a slope, until my fren told me that its not wise to do so as it will damage the gear box and stuffs. Yea, seriously heartache when it scream in pain.

I don't think it will really damage the gearbox. A few of my friends in HK who drive auto cars and know how to drive down long steep slopes properly (lots of Hongkongers don't) will shift to L or 2 before going down long slopes, to prevent brake fade. They have been doing this for 7, 8, 9 years and have not experienced any problems with the gearbox (asked them before).

Of course, it is important to slow down sufficiently first - shifting into L or 2 at high speed will definitely be more damaging - I think this is what your friend was talking about. Then again, I don't recall many slopes in Singapore steep enough (either uphill or downhill) to require shifting into L, possibly with the exception of underpowered cars going up some multi-storey carparks.
