Yah man........ basket.... seek a simple answer to widget, read the link provided and ended up with even much more terms which I'm unfamiliar with. <_<

Do you use Vista or 7? If yes, you can place stuff at the side like a RSS reader, the analogue clock, weather thingy, etc. Those are all widgets.

I got a 'mountain tortoise' question here... all these apps, widgets, etc. - do you need to be on a particular subscription plan in order to get this stuff? How are all this downloaded?

Cannot get from just free WiFi?? :D

Sure, if people are still using OS for phones as a judge of its domination in the market.

Most people on the street have absolutely no idea what their phones are running on in the first place.

Things are evolving. Windows 7 mobile and upcoming iPhone 4G with OS4 among others (including Andriod 2.2).

If you based on Gartner, which is again as biased as they can get.

They are paid by the companies who they rate.

Remember our recent CDO crisis? Our dear Standard & Poor took payment from banks to give their CDO junk AAA++++ ratings..

How's that for conflict of interest?

Best to judge is really the availability of apps in each of these OS. These will be the decision factors. The ecosystem created by iPhone dev is similar to what google did for Android.

But then, Google stamping on all people and places infringing privacies is not something I would take lightly.

Who knows, your phone will transmit all your activities to Google. Who you call, what sites you visit..etc.

They have always used the smartphone OS as a judge of its domination. Its not done any other way.

Are you sure Gartner is biased? Most of their clients are not the companies that they rate, rather its the users. Besides what does Gartner have to do with Standard and Poor???

I disagree with using apps as time also plays a factor. A user base esp for new(er) OS's like the iphone OS and Android is a better indicator as its about the uptake of the product. However if you would like to use apps as an indicator, both android and the iphone store are getting about 5000 new apps per month.

As for stamping on people, I believe Apple is the biggest culprit right now (bloody sell-out). Between the Gizmodo tactics, the report on how they treat their staff, the usage based iAd's that coming up, the refusal to let us do/have what we want on our product, etc. I would take Google's crap over Apple's crap anyday.

Nope, you can get them via wifi though their respective app repositories. AFAIK the only system that requires a particular subscription to work properly is the blackberry OS.

aCurrency - Currency exchange rates

This one is good. Live view of the quote in a widget. Some people use it to trade currencies!

tap money tracker - keep track of my banks and credit card spending

I suggest Loot. The free version is very powerful already. I know my bank account status even before they send the statement. If an account is entered as zero, keying in the last credit card statement due amount will make it negative. Very good.

There is danger though. Lose the phone and ..... [bigcry] People know how much you have in that fat Swiss bank account.

Thank you all for the long list of apps. But given that it is a long list, do any of you have any favorites?

thanks genie for the Loot

i've just tried it out but dont like it cause there is no transfer option

i prefer to have transfer option so that when its time to pay for example account B,

account A my main salary, i will just transfer it

instead of withdrawing from account A then insert into account B

The only thing lacking in Android (for me at least) is a solid gps app. I am currently using Sygic and it is just adequate. Went Malacca once and the prog dropped signals a couple of times or the map is incomplete, POIs needless to say is much inferior to malsing etc. The only cool feature is the ability to switch seamlessly when you cross the causeway.

Really waiting for Garmin or mapking to come onboard. Papago supposed to have Android version but not that well received I think in Lokyat forums...
