Ahhuat 1st Gear August 1, 2010 Share August 1, 2010 Major govt dept with big budgets and talents. but they operate like fish markets. Not enough parkinig lots than start to build? Worst than buying grocery. When we buy grocery, we try to keep enough stocks. LTA over release COE in the past few years. HDB did not respond to build more parking lots. Like that anybody also can be gehment. i understand this is a car forum and ppl here are car owners, like me. but spare a thought for more than 50% of singaporeans who dont drive and would rather see that land and resources used for car park lots go to something more fruitful like a park, or a kindergarten or a playground. so i dont blame them for building lots when the demand is there cos honestly, this shouldnt be the govt's first priority. taking care of the MAJORITY should be their first priority and the majority dont give a hoot about car park lots. honestly, till i was 17, the family didnt own a car. back then, if i saw more resources go to car park lots, my blood would sure boil. Ahhuat 1st Gear August 1, 2010 Share August 1, 2010 Calculation $66million for 5000 car lots $13200 per car lot Assuming Lifespan for Car lot 99 years (just like HDB flats). (I don't think HDB going to tear away the Carpark and built new one every 20 years.) $13200/ (99*12) =$11.11 This would be the cost for building the car lot per month. So the rest of the parking fee is for maintenance etc. Cheers Chng when referring to MSCP, it is not amazing that it is expensive. but that expensive??? Ahhuat 1st Gear August 1, 2010 Share August 1, 2010 The root of the problem is the increasing car population. More COEs released in the last few years, resulting in heavy traffic on the expressway, no sufficient car parks etc. A fairer system in my opinion is to penalise those with more than one car per unit. Charge more car an for the 2nd car, and even more for the 3rd car and so on. Every unit will be entitled to a standard rate for one car and if they have more cars, they woud have to pay more. Building more carparks will not solve the problem, controlling and discouraging car population is a wiser solution. well said. some of the ppl here dont undstd that they are actually rich. how poor can one be if one can afford a car? and if one thinks he is poor, you shouldnt be driving in the first place. till today i take the train to work, squeeze with the rest. ppl here should get off their high horse and stop demanding that land and resources go to lots to display their precious cars. there are other singaporeans too! not just those who drive. not happy, take all their money and wealth and leave! Cybersurf 1st Gear September 17, 2010 Share September 17, 2010 If one does not do currency conversion, one will realized that parking in HK is indeed expensive! And definitely in the city area... Sky high! Cost of living not low in HK. One bowl of wanton noodles is about HK$40 today... Cars are much cheaper than Singapore, but it's the parking that kills. Even in condos, each household has to pay for the parking lot, or like one bro here mentioned, to bid for it.

Bystander50 5th Gear September 17, 2010 Share September 17, 2010 It's the price of land that costs a bomb. It's now like $1000 psf for a condo in neighbourhood area. Well, we all know who's the bad guy controlling the price. Wasn't it stated then gov acquired land in pte property that is designated as road, the compensation is very minimum? For the case of carpark or MSCP, it can also be considered a road in a stacked manner. Therefore, this "designated" road should not have so much land cost.
