  1. come... let's talk about NS shall we? for me, the memories were mostly ok... some unforgettable ones were: - unknowingly took up a prone position in a nest of ants during a training exercise... jumped up and tio kan by the sergeant - dozing off during an evening ambush (at Tekong) and waking up suddenly in total darkness seeing nothing (couldn't even see my own hands) - lost the ring of a smoke grenade but luckily able to find it before the sergeant knew about it (avoid at least three extras!) - eating many leftover drumsticks like yao gui while cleaning the cookhouse the camps I've been posted to: - Nee Soon Camp - Tekong - Pasir Laba Camp (terrible memories!) - Mandai Camp - Khatib Camp - Sungei Gedong Camp - Paya Lebar Airbase (good life there!)
  2. Many MCFers here are experts in your own fields. Just curious. Is there any topic you could talk for at least 30 minutes without preparation? Maybe let me start the ball rolling. I have been trained in the field of semiconductor. Maybe for me it is semiconductor or Agile/Scrum master? I am not exactly an experienced scrum master but due to covid, I have attended quite a number of 2-Day courses so much so that I could now turn off the PC and start talking like them for 30 minutes. The content can be quite repetitive and overlapping. On a side note, if you are able to talk on your topic for at least 30 minutes, you may want to consider starting an online course or create youtube material for that topic!
  3. I see many bros here like to talk about China history. Lets discuss here.
  4. I am sure some of us have to travel frequently, so this thread is for members to share tips and comments on the various lounges around the world. Do post pictures too and whether they are free, as part of some membership of a frequent flyer card, or free access from your bank / credit card etc I will post some pics as I go forth around the world :) Local lounges for starters: The Gold Lounge For SQ Gold members, it's a basic place, decent space, free wifi and you can get a decent meal. Nothing fancy, but entirely acceptable if you arrive early for your departure flight out. No showers Business Silver Lounge Showers, nice chairs, much quieter, food is a couple of notches up, and you can sit in solitude without rubbing shoulders with an army of people who made it to the lounge with their miles. Both lounges get nice soups, including some nice lotus root soups :)
  5. Just joined a new team. This senior like to stand too close when he talk. When I back off, he close the distance. Got any polite way to handle? Might be a little sensitive to tell him directly. Advice appreciated. Kum Siah.
  6. Dear all, Was doing some clearing and realised that after vacuuming for awhile ... the dust bag inside got lots of dust. So when we throw it away, must get it replace. Then I saw this new model that don't use the bag kind but some new technology don't need to replace the dust bag and it cost $498!! So just wanna find out from here who use those type like Osim Mermaid etc .. what are the feedback?
  7. Let's talk about addictions. I know the word addiction has a bad connotation but I am sure we all have some. My number one addiction now is social media like forums or Facebook. If I am free I will always browse inside. Almost like cannot live without it. BUT it does not cost money. My number two addiction is costing me money..... Online shopping. Ever since I discovered lazada, aliexpress and realised how easy it is to purchase an item through the hand phone, I find myself browsing and buying things more and more often. True, the items also are cheap but then again, many cheap items add together will be very expensive. What about you all? Any addictions? Like car groowing that you must clean it every day or you feel strange?

Any good Lobang? Groupbuy for particular item? Sunshade? Simply just a show of hands how many Tucson owners are there? Who knows maybe we can organize meetup and gather for la kopi session? Nickname / Where you stay / Colour of your ride / car plate no. 1) Yu245 / Punggol / Silver / yet to collect my car )
  10. Hi all, Fish is perceived as a healthy source of protein (Omega). My current maid told me his ex-employer in Hong Kong is a fish lover and wanted fish for every meal if they are eating at home. Do you eat fish everyday? I thought this is a good idea and seriously thinking about buying more fish in the near future. What are the fish that are known for a nice steamed dish? I'm sure there are both cheaper one and the more exotic one. Any lobang for reasonable priced fishes around? Fish guru, please advise. Thank you very much. Regards,

  16. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/450-000-seniors-eligible/988234.html I thought this is one of the better policies recently. Only applicable to citizens born before 1949 and is citizen before1986. This one really targeted born singaporean family and not new citizens. I have always thought there should be some differentiation between "new citizens" vs those singapreans that are born and raised here. Even though I don't qualify (not that old) it is going to help my family because both my inlaws and my mom qualifies :)
  17. Have seen this for quite a number of weeks now. This is at Holland Drive Market, a store with a Japanese sign and lots of pictures and Japanese words. Always a large crowd of elderly people inside, listening to some sales talk. Also, there would be people outside waiting for their turn to listen to the talk. What exactly are they trying to sell to the elderly? I hope it is not a scam. See the video. https://youtu.be/83K2icQExfo
  18. Any reason for this? hmmmm Hotels in Bintan no longer accepting Singapore dollars Bintan, Indonesia. Photo: Ye Yumeng All transactions must be made in local currency, Indonesian hotel operators say mail print View all 2 comments BY KELLY NG [email protected] PUBLISHED: 4:04 AM, SEPTEMBER 18, 2014 SINGAPORE — Several hotels and resorts in the Indonesian island of Bintan have stopped accepting Singapore dollars since the start of this month, citing a government policy that requires all transactions to be made in the Indonesian rupiah. Five hotel operators, including Banyan Tree Bintan and Nirwana Gardens, told TODAY that they had been told not to accept foreign currencies. Prior to this, Singapore and American dollars were allowed to be used on the island, the operators said. The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, however, said the rupiah-only policy is not a new one. An embassy official from its information, social and cultural department referred TODAY to a Bill passed by the Indonesian Parliament in May 2011, which requires all financial transactions within Indonesia to be made in rupiah. An online report posted on legal firm Allen & Overy’s website said the currency law took effect on June 28 that same year, but does not apply to “transactions related to the state budget, grants given by or to a foreign state, international commercial transactions, bank deposits denominated in foreign currencies and international finance transactions”. While it is not clear why the law is being enforced only now, a report by the Antara news agency in June this year said the Bank of Indonesia is encouraging people to use the rupiah in their transactions ahead of the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community next year. “Bank of Indonesia has asked all entrepreneurs and the Indonesian community to use the rupiah currency in every transaction across the nation, as the bank feared that other countries will be one step ahead of Indonesia,” the central bank’s Deputy Governor Ronald Waas had been quoted as saying. Some travel agencies in Singapore said they had not been told about the rupiah-only policy. But an Asia Travel spokesperson said the company had been told by local operators in Bintan that travellers must use only the rupiah because of a “new government policy”, although it did not receive any official notification. Several travellers described the currency restrictions as inconvenient, but added that they will not be deterred from visiting Bintan. Communications specialist Chua Ee Ghim, 27, is concerned about carrying too much cash as the rupiah comes in far smaller denominations than Singapore dollars. “I have to be very careful in keeping my notes and ensure that shopkeepers give me the correct change,” he said. The policy appears to have not taken effect in Batam yet. Batam is another Indonesian island popular with Singaporeans seeking short getaways. Three resorts there told TODAY that they still accept payment in Singapore dollars. Batam was in the news last month after Indonesian immigration officials at the Batam Centre began sending ferry passengers back to Singapore for talking too loudly.
  19. bro and sis, when we talking to someone, are we should talk in different manner to different people? example: - when you talk to stranger/ same/ higher level then you, you talk polite, maybe to show that you have high education, good family background, etc. - when you talk to your employee/ lower level then you, you talk like you own this world, etc... do you often see/ meet that kind of people?
  20. ..over in Africa, this really exists https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=436058...e=2&theater Like I say, we all have problems, and each have their own burden to carry. Of late, been a bit philosophical, asking abt our relevance in this universe. I wonder, what exists after death? Have always been wondering for the longest time. What exactly is this body we exist in? What is this soul that gives the means to think, make conversation, compare 9in vs 7in [laugh] Dunno, but I myself have been searching for the answers for the longest time. Peace all
  21. Saw this in my email today. I see the LTA sgconversation is really much better done than the MND one.... At least they made the effort to feedback and makes you feel that they value the time you spent going down to LTA. Dear Sir/Mdm, AN INVITATION: WRAP-UP SESSION TO PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON COE AND CAR OWNERSHIP ISSUES 1. About a month back, we invited you to a focus group discussion on how to better delineate Category A and B cars under the COE system, and to address multiple car ownership. The session is an enriching one from which we gained useful feedback and insight to the issues. 2. We would like to invite you to a wrap-up session to the public consultation exercise. In this session, we will share with you and other participants from the public, the academia and the industry on the views gathered from surveys, written submissions, dialogues and focus group discussions. You would have the opportunity to exchange views with our Chief Executive, Mr Chew Hock Yong, who will be hosting the event. 3. Do let us know if you can attend the session to be held on 26 August 2013 (Monday). Dinner will be provided from 5pm onwards, with the session commencing at 6pm sharp.

  23. I was at SingPost Jurong Point to collect something this afternoon........there were a total of 10 counters......but only 3 out of 5 working for general services........2 out of 4 on remittance..........of which 1 is for telco boxes return or something like that............only 1 counter for registered mail collection cum parcel sending............ I had to queue for more than 30 min just to collect a few mails.............reason being there was only 1 counter and the staff had to handle both collection of registered mail and those who wants to send parcels........ The fun part was........a PRC wanted to send parcel and the Filipino counter staff could not understand, and best part is nobody behind the counters were able to help......the Filipino had to refer the PRC all over the counters while the PRC got very lost and started to get demanding............I stepped forward to help translate and settle their dispute so that the queue could move on............or we would all be stuck....... two things came to my mind........ 1) the PRC was very demanding and requested for someone who can speak mandarin to come forward to service her..........but Filipino could not understand a single word of what she was saying.........really a chicken and duck talk situation......... 2) what have our SingPost become???.............not even one staff can speak mandarin in the whole place...........and now SingPost really look like an Emart liao.......selling funny funny things.......even sell handphone and all......... things here are really changing........... [:/]
