  3. ST Forum HOME > ST FORUM > ONLINE STORY Jan 7, 2011 Dishonesty wins, integrity loses LAST week, while driving to work, my car was hit from behind at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 1 and Corporation Road. The rear of my beige Toyota Vios was hit by a dark blue Peugeot van. The driver, a man in his 40s, apologised and said that his van had rolled forward while he was picking up something from the vehicle floor. He had forgotten to engage his handbrake, he said. I checked the rear of my car while he kept assuring me that it was a gentle knock which could not have caused much damage. There were some slight scratches on the bumper and its right side was dislodged. The driver knocked it back into place, saying it was just a clip. I asked for his contact number and wrote down his identity card number and vehicle plate number. He did not ask me for the same. When I arrived at work half an hour later, a friend joined me to inspect the car more closely. She pointed to a 10cm crack on the rear bumper. I sent the driver a photo of the damage via Multimedia Messaging Service and said I would need to go to Borneo Motors for the repairs as my car was still under warranty. He called and discouraged me from going to Borneo Motors as he was sure it would escalate the price of repairs. He asked me to send my car to his workshop in Kaki Bukit instead. I decided to go to Borneo Motors for an assessment and quotation first before meeting him at his workshop at 3.30pm. At Borneo Motors, the motor claims assessor advised me that I had to replace the bumper and realign the boot door. The repair would take three days and cost $1,358. She reminded me that any repairs done at other workshops would void the car's current warranty on the repaired part. She also cautioned me that there may be leakage problems in the car boot if repairs were not done properly. I reiterated that to the driver. He questioned how it could be possible that the boot alignment could be affected by a gentle hit. "You must understand that I am only an employee, I don't earn much. I don't want to cause any trouble to my company (he was driving his company car)", he said repeatedly. He would pay only if the repairs were done at his workshop. In the end, we agreed to report the accident to our insurers. I would claim third party insurance from his company. A surveyor's inspection was planned on Dec 30 and the day before, a staff member from Borneo Motors informed me that the third party insurer had rejected my claims as the driver's report was in conflict with mine. His report stated that I had reversed my car and hit his car. I was appalled. I called his cellphone four times but my calls went unanswered. I used my friend's phone to call him and he picked up the call. He was stumped when I asked him about what he had stated in the accident report. He defended his stand and told me he would leave it to the insurance company to take care of it before hanging up on me. I was naive and did not anticipate the driver distorting the truth to reduce his liability. With only his word against mine and no statement from independent witnesses, it is likely that I will have to withdraw the claim and pay the full amount of $1,358 myself. Otherwise, the losses to me will be greater in the long term if I claim from my own insurance policy, which has a 50 per cent no-claims discount. If justice decides it will do me a favour this time, I may be lucky enough to find a witness to the accident through this letter - failing which, all I can say is that a man's integrity is priceless. 4. one of our garment core value is Integrity. But out there in the garment agencies, have you ever encounter officer who does not comply and commit to this value? Is there any channel that we can make a report of those officers who does not have integrity, did not play their role correctly, misuse of their power, or involved in intangible bribery?

  6. Ferrari have accused McLaren of being "naked opportunists" at an appeal over the result of the Brazilian Grand Prix. McLaren objected to Williams and BMW not being penalised for using fuel that was too cool in the season finale. If the FIA upholds the appeal McLaren's Lewis Hamilton could depose Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen as world champion. McLaren lawyers have called for a reclassification of the championship which led to Ferrari's sharp retort - a final ruling is expected on Friday. Hamilton was seventh in Brazil behind a Williams and both BMWs. If Williams's Nico Rosberg and BMW Sauber pair Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld are disqualified, the Englishman could be moved up to fourth and would gain enough points to overtake Raikkonen, who won the race. Hamilton finished the season one point behind the Finn. McLaren Barrister Ian Mill pointed to 26 instances in Formula One history where there had been disqualifications and a championship reclassification. "We offer no special plea on behalf of the team, but I ask you to do what normally happens," he said. "It's clear the infringement of this rule did have a performance-enhancing effect. "If you put in cool fuel it increases the horse power. "The principle is clear: if there was a performance enhancement, there was a breach and there has to be a disqualification. "I ask you to address this as though it was any team at any stage of the season. "It cannot make a difference it was the last race of the season, and that it will decide the championship. "Invariably, whenever there has been a disqualification, there has been a reclassification." But Ferrari's Nigel Tozzi countered: "This is not the way a Formula One world championship should be won. "Mr Hamilton himself, potentially the only beneficiary, has said very clearly he does not want to win the championship this way. "Mr Norbert Haug, head of Mercedes motorsport, has again gone on the record and said McLaren are not appealing in order to claim the championship. "Mr Martin Whitmarsh (McLaren F1 CEO) in an interview yesterday said 'finding a way to award the world drivers' championship to Lewis retrospectively, is not at all what this is about'. "It could be said McLaren are shameless hypocrites devoid of any integrity, or maybe what their representatives have said should be taken at face value. "If what they want is clarity, then by all means let them have that, but do not allow them to have the world championship this way. "It would be a serious injustice to Mr Raikkonen should the world title be taken away from him, a fact recognised by Mr Hamilton and Mr (Fernando) Alonso. "As McLaren are fond of saying: 'The championship should be decided on the track and not in the courtroom'," he concluded. It is widely expected that the FIA will not change the race classification even if it decides to punish Williams and BMW Sauber and it is unlikely to result in Raikkonen losing out. And Hamilton has already said that he does not want to win the championship in this fashion. F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, former Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher and Britain's last world champion Damon Hill also believe it would be bad for the sport if the championship is settled in this way. But the trio are united in their belief that McLaren's appeal will not affect the outcome of the title race. Ecclestone said on Wednesday: "I don't think Formula One fans would like a championship to be won because the temperature of the fuel, which can't be measured anyway, is possibly 5C out," he told The Times. "If anybody thinks that is the best thing for Formula One, then I'd have a serious thought about retiring. "They don't have to change the results of the race - it's an infringement of the regulations. "On the same weekend, McLaren used an extra set of tyres, which they shouldn't have used - that was an infringement - so if anything does happen at this Court of Appeal, maybe they'll treat it exactly the same as the tyres."
  7. McLaren should just fire the two f**king spanish drivers....from day 1 I believe that they don't fit in the team. 8. Hi all, Chanced upon a new Fabia which was smashed by falling trees in the Alps. Nevertheless, the passenger cell remains intact with minimal signs of intrusion. I cannot imagine the result if it is a Japanese compact saloon.
