1st convertible? 2nd car? Then you can always try a COE car to see if you really like a convertible. MX-5, Honda CRX (Del Sol), Toyota MRS. Cheap but you might need to spend some $$ to restore. Z3, SLK and SL.

 

Then there are old (non-COE) VW Beetle, Peugeot 206 & 307, Renault Megane etc but I rahter stay away from these.
