This is how the engines are assembled by hand....

If you ask me, I feel its a little low tech considered some manufacturers have adopted a fully automated process which is be even more precise than hand assembled.

I believe the gloves worn by Nissan workers introduce contamination risk to the assembly line. While the methods of Nissan engine assembly also looks inferior to Mercedes'

Yes, engine have to be assembled by hands, and sometime partially assisted by automation.

Recently, saw Discovery channel in Starhub Cable under the series "Super Factory", which show how they manufacture cars.

In the series, they had 1hr episode each for BMW Z4, Lambo, Hyundai, Porsche. Next week, there will be 1 episode on the Corvette.

Look out for this program, very interesting.

This is not low tech... its because Nissan wants their GTR engine to be built by hand.. Every Engine is being handled by only one engineer only to ensure reliability.. It is said that every GTR engine is different.. The power different slightly..

that's the problem if you watched it without narrator explaining what's going on... handbuilt doesn't always mean low-tech.. all of supercars and superbikes are hand built...

Engines don't really require clean room environment unlike wafer fab so its quite ok.

Those are low volume production, thats why can be done by hand. But look at those highly automated factories (in youtube). Wah, literally fully automated assembly line.

QC inconsistency?

QC inconsistency?

Hopefully not. Cause engines will have minor variations due to difference in tolerances (nothing can be manufactured perfectly). But if the variation in HP is too great, then something is wrong with the QC......

You have asked me for my advice concerning whether you should find a decent job or pursue graduate study after graduation, and I will try to make some useful suggestions. It is really a dilemma for all of us when faced with such alternatives. True, attending graduate schools has become a trend in recent years. Enrollment in graduate schools exploded in recent years.

Check out the youtube vids on how ferrari make their engines. Mostly hand built as well. In addition, their blocks and heads are sand cast. Each engine's sand casted mould is destroyed after it is used only once. So each ferrari engine is one of a kind sort of.

All car engines are sand casted. Low volume production engines can be made by hand. But not for high volume ones.
