How do you define success?

I think success is very hard to define and I think it is very relative.

From what i observe, people feel sucessful and happy when they are doing RELATIVELY better than their close group of relatives or immediate social circle or friends.

Nobody compares himself to Mr Quek LB and says wah i so lousy.

But if I earn 2.5k as a fresh grad, and all my immediate circle of friends earn 3 K+... Then you feel like s--t. Bottom of the pile.

BUt if all your friends earn 2.5K and you are the only one earning 3K, you'll feel pretty good about yourself, even though there's no significant difference in the bigger scheme of things...

So success to you is just bein better off than your peers? Well just asking cos I see many here apparently feel they are not successful cos of govt, pap, ft, whatever and are generally an unhappy Singaporean. Not being able to get a fancy car or job which pays 150k pa or whatever appears to be a neccesary thing to many but seems that nobody says that in all the answers here?

We should look more into that like how many hour to achieve that 3K salary against the 2.5K salary, If a person earn 3K but work 8am to 10pm as compare to one earning 2.5K and work 8.30am to 5.30pm, then theoritically, the 2.5K person may earn more per hour. But then as a fresh grad, they tend to work harder and being younger they are more energertic

No right definition. Is subjective and up to personal preference.

I guess worldly success means you have lots of money and status. I guess spiritual success (as a chritian POV) means you are at peace with god and able to cast out your worldly desires and follow the bible.

Ya, I agree with you.

It is subjective.

To me success is that one is able to fulfill his dream..

Not just peers, but more the immediate group of friends and relatives.

I guess if you make 150K, but your close friends/relatives all pull 250K, then you'll be unhappy.

thats why i say its relative...

Maybe its just me, but i haven't heard this kind of comparison before...

Quote an example, a young legal pupil works 16 -18 hour days pulls 4.5K vs an young engineer pulling 3.2K working 8 hour days, would you really say the lawyer is less sucessful cos he/she makes less per hour?

Hmmm seems everyone wants to give a general defined answer when the question is how YOU defined success? So say U think 200k pa is the threshold for a your define success than do say? Some people maybe 100 or some people may be having kids who to Harvard or maybe being MP? Whats your aspirations rather than others?

Which would you rather be? That a young lawyer with high potential or that Engineer with lower potential? You can choose cos as I say the Question is How YOU define success. No right or wrong answer. You know the standard for success can be so varied as to find any unknown species of frog in the maazon, find acure for shiggles, have children or grow a new species of orchid or save a endangered species...all which have their merits.

What you have described is contentment, but I appreciate that part of being successful is being able to achieve contentment [thumbsup]
