Whats The Real Purpose of Making Exotic Cars?

Is it really to make money or is it because of a passion for cars?

Cause making exotic cars is not as profitable as making mainstream one and some are not even making money. Most of the exotic car companies belongs to big companies that makes mainstream cars other than privately owned.....

Tata -> Jarguar

Lambo -> VW

Bentley -> VW

Ferrari -> Fiat

Bugatti -> VW

Think Porsche is the only one not owned by a company and has share in VW.

Thus I just wonder if these cars are created for the passion or for economic reasons?

I think from marketing perspective, its about brand positioning.

eg Audi top end is the R8 and you can find some of the features in their other models like Quattro all wheel drive.

for the rich and famous... they like to have stuff that are especially made for them...

I do agreed such things are meant for rich and famous but whats the point of making these things for them if you (or your company) is barely surviving due to low volume? Then you need to spend alot on R&D etc and you end up earning too little from the car.

Eg. Look at a Murcielago. Its around USD 350K for one (don't look at SG prices). How many cars they need to sell just to make 1 billion? Around 2858 a year. I don't know if they are able to sell that many Murcielagos every year to make 1 billion sales (not profits).

Sorry should be the other way, Jarguar -> Tata.

Tata sells some of the cheapest cars in the world esp. in India. If selling such cheap cars can allow them to buy a brand like Jarguar, I think their volume must be tremendous....
