if i have a volume flow rate of 4770L/min thru a 3" diameter pipe.

 

how to calculate the velocity in meters per sec for the flow thru the pipe ?

Assumptions:

 

1.) Incompressible flow i.e. volume conservation = mass conservation

2.) One dimensional flow in x - direction

3.) Fully developed flow

 

Volume flow rate = velocity * cross sectional area

 

Volume flow rate = 4770L/min = 0.0795m^3/s

Area = pi* (0.0762/2)^2

 

Thus, velocity = Volume flow rate / cross sectional area

= 17.43m/s

Gas flow velocitiy is more complicated than just V/A.

Are you using Standard or Normal Conditions? The rated temp & pressure at different conditions affects the velocity tremendously.

mine is fuild...straight forward type...gas can compress...so more difficult...but then ....do it once...the next time will get it liao.. :D

4770L/min = (4770*1000)cm^3/(60 sec) = (4770*1000/60)/(100^3)m^3/sec = (4.7/60) m^3/sec = 0.0783333333 m/sec

 

Cross-sectional area of pipe = pi*r^2 = (pi*d^2)/4 = .25*pi*(3in)^2 = [.25*pi*(3*2.54/100)^2]m^2

 

= 0.00456036731m^2

 

Hence velocity of flow = flow-rate/cross-sectional area = 0.078333/0.00456036731 = 17.18 m/sec.
