Personally, I do agree that Garmin is a gd brand after reading numerous reviews and tested my friend's unit myself.

What I would worry will be whether they are water goods etc.

[:/] I have not heard the phrase "water goods" since the handphone craze in the 1990s when I was in JC.

I am considering between the Garmin 1350 and the Garmin 1490. Do you think bluetooth and the larger screen (5') is worth the additional $60?

If budget is not a concern, go for the Garmin 1490. Bluetooth is very useful as the Singapore law states that holding a HP while driving is a very serious offence. I have the Garmin 1350 and kinda regret not having gotten the Garmin 1490 instead.

OK, I just ordered the Garmin 1490 from this bestbuyelec.com. It will be delivered to me this afternoon. After some searching, I found this to be the best deal. There are so many good reviews online about this company so hopefully I will not be the unlucky one [sweatdrop]

Post review? I am thinking of upgrading to either the Garmin 1490, 2565 or 3790.

I got the Garmin 1490 at $219 from www.bestbuyelec.com. The advertised price on the website is $239 but if you ask about the Garmin 1490 special promo (stated in another car forum), you can get it for $219. It also comes with the traffic receiver which costs $89 elsewhere. The traffic receiver receives live traffic updates from LTA and prompts you of a traffic congestion along your route. It also allows you to avoid traffic and the GPS will reroute you around the traffic congestion. I am overall very happy with this purchase. The bluetooth pairs with my iphone and I can use the GPS to make and receive phone calls as the GPS is able to access the iphone phonebook, call history etc using the bluetooth. I think this is a useful feature because I normally do not pick up the phone when I am driving as hp driving is a very serious offence. I have never ever gotten lost ever again since I got this gps.

$219 is very tempting, but I have a garmin 1350 and I need to sell it (or give it away) first.

I got the brand new Garmin 1300 with traffic receiver at $179 from bestbuyelec.com. It has the same features as the Garmin 1350. Elsewhere, it costs $219 for the GPS + $89 for the traffic receiver = $308. Free delivery, cheap and good!

Don't get swayed by the cheap price. Many a times someone, who does not know anything about GPS and failed to do some research on it before taking the plunge, end up with something that's a junk. The most important consideration when buying a GPS is not the price but the map support. No point if the device cost only $50 but you get a lousy map with no update at all. If you want cheap GPS devices, there are tons of these real cheap China GPS devices out there with virtually non existant map support. Pay a little bit more and get a reliable one. Garmin is well know around the world for GPS. You can also consider Papago and Marbella.

See the last post. For $179, you can get a brand new Garmin 1300 with free lifetime traffic updates: www.bestbuyelec.com

Why even bother with other brands? My 2 cents

Was using a Holux GPSmile 62 series and Garmin MobileXT on one of my spare Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, and frequent map update from malfreemap is great that was until last month when the vendor for Papago decided to stop future map update.

Between these 2 I prefer Garmin as the route direction is better and Garmin's map update from malfreemaps seems to be "strong". If I were to get a standalone DND unit, I will definately go for Garmin, would avoid others, due to their constant map update from malfreemaps and other sites :) Oh, btw I also managed to load in Australia and Thailand map in my Garmin mobileXT, I believe this can be done for Garmin DND too.

courts now offering...schinco series mostly below SGD$200

I think Shinco ranks among the worst brands where GPS is concerned. So many horror stories about Shinco.

It is the same promo. $239 was also for the refurb set. bestbuyelec.com has updated the promo price online to $219. I think this deal is the best value for money now.

Just curious to know how does the traffic receiver works? is it an additonal devise installed into your GPS? If i will to update the map myself from other source, will it delete away the traffic receiver? If my current GPS does not have traffic receiver, possible to buy it from BestBuy Elec?
