Hi,

I am new to this forum. Am looking for a good GPS as a Xmas gift for hubby. I read through the thread and realized the most popular brand listed is Garmin and the two models I see,n recommended so far is 1490 and 2465.

May I know between these two models, which one should I buy for hubby? Hope you all can help me out as I am really a goner when it comes to such gadgets.

Thanks in advance.

If need camera function will be more expensive.

Take Garmin 2465. Challenger pricing is good as well if you are member. I saw it at comp show for $222 whilst i bought it (2465) for $247 a month plus ago... [:(]

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I just called up Parisilk and they quoted me $235 for 2465 model. Price reasonable. I think I would go for that model then.

By the way, you mention camera function, does 2465 have such function?? And what does a camera function do? Sorry ah.. i know my questions are silly but I am really unsure.

During my recent trip to Malaysia, my Garmin 255W did its job extremely well. Guiding me to Genting. Melaka, Cameron and Port Dickson. However problem arises when navigating into KL esp on the expressway when many direction signs started popping out. For example, along the expressway near, there could be 3 direction signs (leading to different place) for each of the three lanes and my GPS does not indicate which lane to adhere to. I have to drive slowly and sometimes make last minute decision dangerously. Does other brand of GPS provides better clarity on the lane where the driver can adhere to? I am using Malfreemap and latest City Navigator maps.

City is liddat one. Too dense and too many routes/junctions and there is so much "accuracy" the GPS chipset can have. My Garmin brings me to Holland in Singapore many times also. [:/]

Garmin is a very good and reliable brand. In normal circumstances, it is able to give you accurate turn-by-turn voice and Junction View guidance on which particular lane to take. Up north, their road signing can be confusing and many a times lack clarity. Alot of times you need to make a turn immediately after seeing the signboard. This does not give you ample time to react. The situation is compounded by the fact that there are also cases, especially in KL, where you have to make another turn immediately after excuting one. It is like making a split second decision, like what you mentioned, deciding which lane to take. Depending on your GPS does not help either. In situation like this, no GPS, regardless of brand, is able to make split second decision to advise you on the correct lane to adopt. I personally encountered this before using a Garmin. So, you have to trust you instinct when choosing the lane to do. I know that if you made a wrong turn on the highway up north, the next U-turn could be anything up to a 100km away. But, it is burning away fuel and adding on to your travelling time but at least you didn't dilly dally at the junction deciding on which turn to make and worse still, get involved in an accident.

Junction view does not always appear.

In the situation where Junction View does not show, it does not mean that your device is faulty. It is due to the fact that not all junctions are captured in the device. It is a very tedious task taking pictures of junctions and programming it into the software.

garmin gps should have junction view. how come yours dun have?

Not all Garmin GPS devices have the Junction View (JCV) features. Only the newer models have this feature. Even if your model is able to support this feature, it also must be a localised one.

Only good thing is garmin offers free map update which can be does easily. I would be changing other brand instead of garmin if i buy another new set

After my extensive use of my Garmin 2565 recently I found Garmin sucks big time despite having the seller updated the latest software and maps (updates not put up for the public yet). The device can't even tell between LEFT and RIGHT. Many times I was misguided. I was also told I had reached my destination (a school) but the actual address was 5 houses away (a house). Also, "No match found" for many locations i.e. Northstar@AMK, Changi City Point, some condos at pasir ris despite TOP months ago. Many times I was guided to make big unnecessary detour when there were shorter routes (those area I roughly familiar).

When reaching your first destination (located in a deep maze of HDB flats), and ready to move to another, it never tell you to turn left, turn right or move forward or backward but tell you to proceed to, eg: AMK ave 6 when I can't even get out of this maze!

I would appreciate if someone can englighten me with regard to the updating of maps and software. Does all Garmin owners update the same thing regardless of which sellers they bought from or each seller have their own updates? Incidentally does anyone have other better GPS to recommend? Thanks.

I hope you are not the proverbial poor workman who blames his tool. Don't be too quick to pull the trigger at Garmin, which is the no. GPS in the world not for nothing. Coming from a GPS forum, I have encountered many members like yourself who are quick to blame the device when things go terribly wrong without examining what is actually the cause of it. There are many happy users who have not had such a bad experiences like you and obviously something is very wrong here. You have to examine very carefully where the fault lies; which many a times is the user's. If it persists, then send it to the dealer for a checkup. I am not saying that Garmin is perfect; in fact no brand is. I do agree that sometimes the direction given can be wrong but it is very rare in such cases and usually it is due to some map data error and not the device. It can happen to any other brands too. One important point to note, which is a very common mistake made by newbies, is that they tend to check on all the maps thinking that with more maps, navigation will be much easier. It doesn't work on a GPS device. If you check on one map, which I suspect is what you did, you get conflicting information during navigation and worse, it will bring you to somewhere instead of your intended destination.

For your info, I used my old and trusty Garmin 660 to navigate thru Austria, Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium and Switzerland. And almost every corner of West Malaysia. Learn to use it well. Garmin routing engine is excellent.
