Was asked by a fellow Forummer on why I'm selecting Outback over Forester. I guess many potential buyers are also in this dilemma. Although we each have our personal preferences, thought it will be interesting to some to share my reasons behnd my choice as this is one of the purpose of forums i.e. share and learn.

Pros of Outback

  • Prefer the quiter ride and more luxurious interior
  • New Outback comes with Rear Vehicle Detection System (check out on Youtube)
  • Don't want the temptation of Turbo [:p] and my driving style is more of relaxed type
  • Less common on road as Forester is practically everywhere
  • Prefer the more elegant design compared to the boxy FXT

Cons of Outback

  • Slightly higher road tax. But on a per month basis, its only $50 more
  • Not sure about parking in tight places and need to get used to length of Outback

Happy to hear from others on their reasoning so undecided buyers can benefit [thumbsup]

Agreed. Also the outback gives a more luxurious feel. And if compared to forester turbo, it's almost the same price . I'm driving a forester non-turbo, lasted me 8years of driving pleasure... Also kenna summan several times too :p... So I guess if turbo I will get more summans ...hahah .

I chose the outback because of roomyier feel ... And also the suspension system is softer, meaning more comfortable ride. My current forester has a harder suspension maybe because it is more an off-road vehicle but I feel its "harder" especially goimg over bumps.

Coming to lane diversion and anti collision, I see most suv and new cars have it. So not much of plus point.

On price level, its more value for money ,i think same price range as the ford kuga, which I test drove it few months back. The plus for kuga is it has automatic parking. Sure hit with the missus but I prefer parking the car myself... Oldskool larh.

Its not "anti-collision"...that's more an "Eye Sight" feature. This Rear Vehicle Detection System is more of a blind spot monitoring thingy. New to this batch of Legacy & Outback.

SE don't know too much about it and not on any official brochure. All I saw was a photo of a brochure [:p] . Hope this will be on new batch and not a figment of SE's imagination.

Yeap. It's eyesight for Subaru, kia, mazda all call it something else but effectively the same thing. I confirmed that 2016 outback has this features. But for the blindspot thing I have my reservations because its basically an icon that is blinking at the wing mirror so if you don't check the wing mirror when changing lanes then it is essentially not useful. This is called passive notifications.

For the next generation US cars, they will use haptics to trigger an active notification , even when the driver is not looking at the mirror the system triggers response on the steering wheel or seat or hardens the turning of the steering column to prevent crashes.

But note not to get the lapis blue because subaru has directive to sell off all the 2015 lapis blue models first.

I doubt 2016 Outback has it. Unlessthey changed their mind and decide to bring in and increase the price at the same time.

Was shown the features list. Saw 3 "new" features. One of them is the Subaru Rear Detection System.

SE said the 2016 Year of Manufacture Outback and Legacy come with Rear Vehicle Detection Systems  (RVDS) & Auto Dimming Mirror. This is the facelift Australian market model and not the JDM, So will just have to take the SE's word that indeed both the new Outback and Legacy comes with these features.

To me, the Auto Dimming Mirror is nice to have but not important. But I really look forward to the RVDS and you can watch a video put up by Subaru Canada on Youtube to view a short clip of how it works.Looks very helpful and useful [thumbsup]

Not sure if the OMV has changed much as a result if these new features but I doubt so. In fact, I was also concerned about a possible price increase for facelift as well as I first heard about this during my first visit to MI in Jan. List price of Outback was then $124,000.

I resisted the temptation and with the big drop in COE, overall price of car has dropped. So even if they did increase the price slightly, its been more than covered by drop in COE.

Do drop by MI and ask the SE about the new Outback if you are planning to get one. Another SE confirming doesn't really mean anything and we can only take their word for it.  But I would think generally AD can be more trusted than PI [:p]

Why do you need the extra car mat? Does it mean the car doesn't come with any as standard?

I meant the EyeSight system when I said I doubt 2016 Outback has it. This consist of front facing cameras with functions like Pre-Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control.

MI had deliberately omited the EyeSight system for all their Subaru offerings (except for 1 previous model with a EyeSight 1.0 system I think) in bid to keep OMV and price low.

The RVDS is a different system independant of the EyeSight system, and yes RVDS is available as an added feature for the coming Legacy and Outback. Hope this clarifies. :)
