Zuoom 1st Gear March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 scenario was on the premise that all was good, as a theoretical exercise. of course in real life, a bit different in dynamic. on the str8? narrow? curving? slow filtering who says will not have contact? you fancy a wager? even when you are stationery someone can come along and bang you... as mentioned, one can think and check that it's all clear and safe. but sometimes, people do tend to miss the most it. no one is perfect, right all the time. people make mistakes. if the filtering was done at a high speed, fast. there's little or no time for anyone to react. the end result will probably be a more serious accident than if it was done slowly and with some amount of time to react. there's no need to wager. you are however free to try the fast filtering move with a TP outrider or car behind you, and see if they will react. as for stationery and someone come along and bang you. certainly. one guy died when he was crush by a tree. but those are not something you can control. ↡ Advertisement
Elfenstar 3rd Gear March 4, 2011 Author Share March 4, 2011 Don't think it's a problem if there's ample space, and you're already ahead by quite a bit. BUT...WHY "very quickly"?!? My usual lah. Slow start, fast finish. (And before polar bear, rad x, etc come in, no I'm NOT talking about sex ) Slow start to allow for errors of judgement, quick finish to reduce the inconvenience to other drivers

1fast1 Supersonic March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 (edited) If you've checked (and I mean the blind spot too) and it's safe, then go right ahead. As quickly as you want. Rudeness is a highly subjective thing. Some people on the road are never happy even if you signal, stick arm/leg/other appendage out of the window to ask cravenly for "permission" then wave "thanks" - still won't save you from a flash or honk from that butthurt idiot. So screw what others think. So, while I voted "No", I really wanted to vote "Who gives a f--k?" Edited March 4, 2011 by Turboflat4
Zuoom 1st Gear March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 I like to think I'm quite aware of whats going on around me. In addition to the checks, I usually try and take note of all the vehicles around me and account for where they are, as well as anticipate what they might do. However the scenario I posted was that in ideal situations when it is safe, and clear to filter. Is doing it fast considered rude? as mentioned in the other post. people make mistake. some more, some less. not if, just when. and judgment is not always on the dot. only human to err. we can anticipate all we want. but sometimes, things dun turn out what we expect. that when and where taking things easy (ie: driving without abrupt turns, fast filter) helps. again, nothing rude about your scenario. if a TP is present. he might consider it as "without due care" or part of reckless driving. you might be "far" away from the intended overtaken vehicle, but if your action cause someone to react in a manner that endanger themselves or others. you can still be booked. had a friend who was charged with reckless (one tier below dangerous) driving. when he did those fast filter in and out. he claimed there was plenty of space between vehicles. the TP that caught him didn't agree. he got 12 points if i remember correctly. *that was in 2004. http://driving-in-singapore.spf.gov.sg/ser...ps_offences.htm ** it seems that reckless and dangerous driving is now lump as one and carry 24 points! the key is that if your action does not affect others, then you are ok. but on a crowded road like what we have, it's bounded to affect. Zuoom 1st Gear March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 They won't unless it was done unsafely. that's when a 3rd party has a better view and would be in a better position to decide if it was. these are the very same guys that's trained to spot n have taken an oath to uphold road safety, etc. i would be inclined to think these guy know their work better than the average road user. *quote the example on the friend who kana the reckless driving, 12pts, 2004. he felt it was safe. plenty of space to cut in n out fast. He got booked.

He got booked. to a certain extent I agree with you. yes, the TP was the best judge of that incident, unless we were there, we won't be able to conclude whether it was or was not reckless. perhaps your friend was(!) reckless, like at Orchard Gudang. perhaps the scenario should be qualified with it being fast (again another relative term), but not reckless. all due care was indeed taken. TS just wants to know if its rude...

Don't fret. I understand what you're saying. I guess I'm applying my scenario rather than a blanket lane change scenario to this situation. I can be a damn rude driver (and I know when I am), but i didnt think so this time, so wanted to verify. Thanks! Btw there was no filter in and out. It was simply filter in fast i.e. I overtook then filtered, not filtered out to overtake then filter back in. There was a filtering out much earlier when he cut into my lane. I figured it was safer to filter one more lane over since it was clear rather than to honk/high beam/force my right of way. Then I gunned it and made sure there was enough clearance to filter back without being in the way. Now that I put it this way, technically I was staying away from a bobo driver

Caravan 5th Gear March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 Slow filtering is the way to go. Sometimes even if you checked blindspots and all, one unsuspecting motorbike may just weaved into the blind spot you just checked. Sometimes they were hidden by another vehicle and they weaved into your blind spot after you have checked. After all the situation is dynamic and both are moving targets. Slow filtering allows someone else the time to horn you or for you to notice something. You are not doing evasive manoeuver why the need to be so sudden? On the road, predictability helps prevent accidents.
Darthrevan Supercharged March 4, 2011 Share March 4, 2011 a move that is well executed i would say..the perfect lane changing is to change lane without making any other vehicles brake..provided u urself dun brake at all while maintaining safe distance from the vehicle in front

I don't think I'm the best driver around, but I do view myself as quite a bit better than most (at least technically). I didn't think of it that way, but am that way on the road (even if I'm not driving so). Good thing you mentioned/thought of it, or I wouldn't have realised it Something to work on getting rid off (at least while on a public road anyway). Thanks again! ↡ Advertisement
